The Partners and their Associates are all practising clinicians who are
actively involved in providing clinical assessments and therapeutic
interventions in addition to their medico-legal practise. They are committed to
providing their services to a high standard.
The consultancy requires a very high level of commitment to education and
training in this field and facilitates continuing professional development of
all its members who are expected to attend regular meetings of clinicians and
also attend meetings of the Ashwood Medico-Legal Forum, which is hosted by the
Consultancy.
The Partners
Anthony W Baker, Consultant in Psychiatry
Dr Baker is a Child and Family Psychiatrist who has specialised in the
assessment of children’s needs where there is a history of abuse and neglect
since 1983. He was formerly Medical Director of a service for treating substance
misuse, which is relevant in cases involving parental neglect and domestic
violence. He has published work on child sexual abuse and sexual offending,
attachment, contact issues in public and private law, contact disputes,
significant harm and use of ECT in minors.
Adrienne Burgess, Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Dr Burgess is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who is trained to work with
adults. She currently works for the NHS and for the Clermont child Protection
Unit in Brighton. Dr Burgess has experience in in-patient forensic settings and
outpatient community work. Dr Burgess has specialist experience in the
assessment and treatment of adults with complex and enduring mental health
problems including personality disorders, drug and alcohol difficulties,
histories of violence and domestic violence. She is experienced in the risk
assessment of adults and families where there is a history of sexual abuse and
convictions, or, where abuse is suspected.
Sylvia P Duncan, Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Sylvia Duncan is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and an accredited Family
Therapist and she is a widely published author in all aspects of child
protection especially sexual abuse, serious injury and assessment of parenting.
Sylvia Duncan has over twenty years experience of conducting assessments in
Children Act and Family Law cases where there have been serious concerns about
the safety and well-being arising out of their experiences of being parented.
Richard P.W. Fry, Consultant In Psychiatry
Dr Fry is a Child and Family Psychiatrist and a qualified Family Therapist.
He has wide experience in the NHS services for children and families having
worked at the Marlborough Family Service and as clinical director in CAMHS
services in London and Hampshire. He has considerable experience in assessments
where there is a background of child protection concerns; parental and child
mental health issues; and, childhood trauma related to parenting issues
including contact disputes following separation. He has special interests in the
area of psychosomatic disorders and has published in this area and in that of
the long term effects of sexual abuse in childhood.
Karen Varney, Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Dr Varney is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with a clinical background
that spans both adult and child and family practice. Dr Varney has worked in the
field of alcohol and substance misuse rehabilitation but she is also very
experienced in working with the psychological aspects of rehabilitation for
physical illness and injury. Dr Varney is a consultant in Local Authority Care
for Looked-After Children and is an experienced assessor in all types of
Children Act cases in the Family Courts.
