As part of a major customer management system migration Baytree IT consultants were heavily involved in the data cleansing activity prior to the migration. At the point of migration more than a million records had been cleansed enabling the migrated data to pass stringent quality tests.
The data to be cleansed fell into a number of categories based on severity of the error and point of the data life cycle. Baytree IT data analysts created a suite of measurement scripts to allow quantitative analysis of the volume of data issues. The measurements were then used to drive a series of cleansing threads which were managed by the operational part of the clients business. By repeatedly measuring and providing feedback to the operational managers the cleansing could be targeted and "show stoppers" for the migration could be resolved early.
The largest category contained almost 1 million records which were missing key data on the legacy system. The legacy system was actually able to cope with this missing data but the new system could not so it was imperative that this data was populated. Given the volume it was not going to be possible to clean this by manual means so Baytree IT analysts created a mechanism for updating the data safely. Using rigorous testing and release management this was successfully completed and the amended data was able to be migrated without a problem.
The bulk of the cleansing activity was required to be done within the legacy environments which gave a further set of issues due to their disparate nature. Indeed a number of data cleansing issues were due to the key data between systems being inaccurate and therefore not allowing certain data to be found for a given record. The skill of the Baytree IT consultants enabled the data to be brought together in a single analysis repository which could be refreshed at will. Using the Baytree IT tool ConText, the data and business analysts were able to view related data across all systems on a single screen and therefore poor quality information was easier to detect.
The migration was successfully completed and millions of customer records are now being serviced by the new system. Baytree IT consultants played a large part in the success of this venture and can look back on a job well done.
