Non-Masonic Charities
Added 24th December 2005
The Grand Charity is the United Grand Lodge's primary channel to non-Masonic charities.
In 2004 the Freemasons Grand Charity gave £2,295,123 (over 45% of the Grand Charity Funds distributed ) in grants to Non-Masonic causes. This included £550,000 to 210 Hospices in England and Wales.
The Grand Charity has also made donations to several international appeals including those for the Asian tsunami (£100,000) and Hurricane Katrina ($50,000). These amounts were given within 24 hours of the events occurring to assist with the immediate relief of those most affected.
Our own Hertfordshire Provincial Charity Fund has recently given over £200,000 to buy new equipment to treat breast, prostate and other cancers. Hertfordshire Freemasons are now concentrating their charitable giving on the 2009 Festival for the Grand Charity.
Generally, Freemasons donate more money to charity than any other organisation, second only to the National Lottery. However it must not be forgotten that Masonic giving is funded entirely by Freemasons and their families and friends- not the general public.
