Quiz Master Masons

Updated 8th June 2011

Worshipful Brother Peter Farrell had just four days to pull together a team for the Halsey Hall Sunday Club charity quiz night but on 30th July the Goffs Oak Lodge was well represented.

Question 1:  Where was the 1984 winter Olympics held ?

Team manager and head coaches Shelagh and Peter, ably assisted by team captains Lynn and Lee, lead the team, completed by Kelly and Dave, Jan and Martin and Ann and Gary, into ten gruelling rounds (and a marathon round !) sustained only by copious amounts of products from the bar and a plateful of curry or lasagne and chips at half-time.

Question 2:  Complete the following name of a pop group - Little Anthony and the ...

Armed with a list of 10 rounds of ten questions, the team had to nominate a round on which to play the 'joker', doubling the points earned for that round.  Initially we decided to play our joker on the 'sports' round but at the last minute changed it to the first round - 'news'.  Lucky for us too: only 10 out of 10 correct - 20 points in the bag !

Question 3:  Which cat's ashes were recently sold at auction ?

We thought we were doing fairly well but were astonished when, at the half-time supper break, the quiz master told us that we were 13 points in the lead.  It was at that point that we started to get serious !!  After a tasty supper (Martin thought it so tasty in fact that he had both the curry and the lasagne) Peter brought the team into a huddle for a pep talk.  He must have been taking lessons from Sir Harry Rednapp, because it worked a treat and the team continued to score well in the second half.

However, in the last round, based on TV's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ? - one point for the first correct answer, two for the second, etc., and the team dropping out with the first incorrect answer - we went out at seven points and when the table behind us continued all the way to 12 points we feared the worst.

After a brief pause to complete the scoring, the quiz master announced the results in reverse order.  With half the scores announced we started to become excited.  When it got down to three tables left, we were gripping the edge of the table.  Down to the last two !  Then, yes !  By just one point !Winning Goffs Oak Team
