Cellulite – A New Approach

Cellulite is 99% a female problem; very few men ever experience cellulite, because of the differences in the skin structure of men and women.

Three layers

Text Box: Three layers
There are three main layers in skin; the epidermis or outer layer, the dermis below this, and the subcutaneous layer.

The epidermis is the same thickness in both sexes, but the dermis is much thinner in women than in men. The subcutaneous layer also exhibits differences. The female layer contains large fat cells in the shape of upright cylinders with arched tops. The subcutaneous layer in men has smaller, flatter fat cells, with a layer of criss-crossing connective fibres.

Because of the thinner dermis in women, any growth in size or unevenness in the fat cells will show up more. Excessive growth of subcutaneous fat cells, or degeneration of subcutaneous tissue, or both, will lead to greater visibility of the underlying structure, leading to the “mattress” effect. The solution is obvious; make the fat cells smaller and repair the connective tissues.

A diet low in refined carbohydrates (sugars, white bread etc.) and fats, and high in complex carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables is essential. Keep off all junk foods and fizzy drinks.

There are great similarities in the causes of cellulite, oedema and varicose veins. The supplements that will help are therefore very similar, and aimed mainly at regenerating connective tissue:

Vitamin C; at least 1000mg per day. This is probably the most important vitamin for connective tissue repair, together with bioflavonoids.

Pine bark extract and grapeseed extract; these exert a powerful antioxidant effect and greatly promote increase of strength and elasticity of connective tissues.
