Brain Fuels and Personality Boosters

Gingko Biloba

This supplement has recently had more publicity than any other for brain function, particularly for the elderly. The attention given to it is well deserved, because it can have some powerful effects.

The flavonoids in it exhibit strong antioxidant effects and promote blood circulation to the brain. They also improve nerve cell function. The net result is improved memory, increased alertness  and lessening of confusion, depression, headaches and tinnitus. The person is therefore more vivacious and cheerful.

Vitamin B6

This vitamin is important to memory, mainly because of its importance in the metabolic pathways of various amino acids which are important in the production of neurotransmitters (brain signal carriers).

Choline and Lecithin

Choline is one of the two major components of lecithin. Choline is involved in the production of neurotransmitters, important for alertness and memory, but as the other major component of lecithin, inositol, helps produce relaxation and healthy sleep, it may be that lecithin has better effects on mental performance and personality than choline on its own.

L-Glutamine

This nutrient works in a different way from the previous supplements. L-glutamine converts to glutamic acid after crossing the blood/brain barrier, and glutamic acid has the power to remove ammonia from the brain. Ammonia is a powerful toxin and therefore depresses brain activity. Its removal allows the brain to work to full capacity. L-glutamine has been known to have powerful antidepressant effects.

Glutamic acid is also, together with glucose, the main brain fuel.

Acetyl L-Carnitine

This supplement may prove to be even more useful than the others previously mentioned. Extensive tests have been carried out over a number of years, and the results have been extremely positive, in particular with age-related brain problems.

In cases of Alzheimer’s disease, great improvements have been seen in levels of memory, alertness, confusion and depression.
