TEAM ADEL

The Bowmen of Adel are keen for its members to take part in all aspects of the sport shooting as individuals for fun or competitatively, or as part of a team. Over the years members taking part in tournaments have often brought back team trophies but this has not been organised in any way. This year the committee is pleased to announce that Som de Silva has been appointed as team manager. Please visit the team page for latest information.

WINTER SHOOTING

The Bowmen of Adel continue to shoot out of doors from October to March at the side of the cricket field, towards the score board hut. Look out for details of the frostbite series (usually with mulled wine) and the indoor postal shoots. All club members take part. There are three trophies shot for each month- the Icicle (for recurve),the Snowflake (for compound) and the Iciclette (for Juniors). We need five archers to make up the recurve team. See calendar for details.

When we don't have use of the hall there is shooting at Quarry House on Friday evenings from 7pm until 9pm.  £3 target fee. Shooting at Quarry House will continue until March with a short Xmas break. Look out for the Halloween Shoot 2nd November and Valentine shoot. Contact lis.o'carroll@dh.gsi.gov.uk

Don't forget you can take part in the Virtual Archery League (run by club President David O'Carroll for the last eight years). Its a competition for individuals- all you have to do is e-mail your best score each month. Send an e-mail now to the organiser at val@virtualarchery.org.uk if you want to take part this coming indoor season. There are archers from all over the country taking part from top tournament standard to beginners. There will be a league division for your abilities. Check out the website at: www.virtualarchery.org.uk

OPEN COMPETITIONS

The Bowmen of Adel organise four open competitions each year:

JANUARY     Indoor Open at The Forum, Quarry House in central Leeds.
APRIL         The St George Longbow Tournament, at Morley Rugby Club, Morley near Leeds.

SEPTEMBER  Outdoor open tournament at Adel in NW Leeds.
SEPTEMBER  The Wharfedale longbow tournament at Adel in NW Leeds.

We are proud that our medals are the finest archery club medals in Yorkshire. The trophies are pretty good too.

BOWMEN OF ADEL INDOOR COMPETITION
This is usually the first indoor Portsmouth to be shot each year in Yorkshire. Ideal if you want some competition practice for the record status shoot at Wakefield the following weekend.

THE ST.GEORGE LONGBOW TOURNAMENT
The St.George is a two-part tournament for longbow archers. All are encouraged to wear period costume (bit not obligatory). The first part is a qualifying round of a two-way Western. The qualifiers enter a shoot-out for the Royal Armouries Arrow. Check out the web pages for the tournament.

BOWMEN OF ADEL OUTDOOR COMPETITION
This is a friendly competition aimed at families and friends. Hardened archers welcome too! Usually a long Western round.

THE WHARFEDALE
The Wharfedale is a longbow competition held at the club each year.
It is a two-way Western shot to BLBS rules- no sighters and no bouncers. In addition it is shot barebow- no sight rings on the bow or ground markers.

The competition is held on the second Sunday in September. Assembly at 10.30am shoot starts at 11am
Check out the web pages for the competition.

CLUB COMPETITIONS & TROPHIES

The club holds two competitions for club members- the Indoor Championships in March and the Outdoor Championships in August.

In addition we have the Nock on the end of May Bank Holiday Monday for the prestigious Gold, Silver and Bronze nocks. This is a handicap competition usually accomanied by food.

In June we hold the Strawberry Shoot- accompanied by the eating of strawberries and in June the Independence Shoot usually held around the 4th July.

Throughout the season you can shoot for the monthly handicap trophy and the Sundial which is shot each month for  the Short Metric round. These trophies are retained for the period until the next shoot.

Etiquette
As we approach the outdoor season (also known as the summer season), it is worth reminding ourselves about the requirements when shooting outdoors. Indoors, the targets are set up ready, and we shoot at set times. Outdoors this is different, with people starting at different times, and shooting different rounds. So we need to be more considerate to others. In particular:-

If you need to put up a new boss, please do so when it is convenient for those already shooting - and ask them first. Don't assume that you can shoot at a boss already put up - ask those shooting at it if they mind, and don't take offence if they do!

If you come on to a boss where archers are already shooting, watch out for their footmarks and do not crowd their space. Of course, it also helps if you set your footmarks so that others can come on to your target if needs be.

If you use a "spotting scope", and you want to leave it on the line, make sure there is still enough space for other archers on the same boss

Collect your arrows promptly, and don't dawdle at the boss. By all means have a good natter but when walking to and from the target, or when waiting to shoot. Remember some people want to concentrate on the shooting line so don't shout across the field.

If someone is looking for a lost arrow, help them. It speeds things up for everyone!

On coaching sessions, remember that coaches or people practising may take more time to shoot, or between arrows; on other sessions, remember that members want to complete their rounds so don't tarry by the bosses.

Always be considerate to other archers.

Always enjoy your shooting!
