Health & Safety - Child Protection - Vulnerable adults

The government’s Every Child Matters: Change for Children strategy (2004) describes every organisation’s responsibility to ensure that the children in its care are healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being. All organisations (including sports clubs), which have an involvement with children, now have clear statutory duties to safeguard children’s welfare.

The GNAS has prepared a Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults policy to protect these vulnerable members and also protect the members who supervise and coach them, from fallacious allegations. All members of the club and visitors are expected to comply with the club welfare statement. For a copy of the club welfare statement please click here.

Health & Safety - Stroke awareness

One piece of vital first aid information is how to recognise a stroke victim. Early medical attention can make a remarkable difference to their recovery.

The simple guidelines are based on the first three letters of STRoke:

  • SMILE can the victim smile?
  • TALK can the victim repeat a simple phrase?
  • RAISE can the victim raise both arms?
and
  • TONGUE can the victim stick out their tongue straight?

Health & Safety - Sun awareness

One of the benefitsof archery is getting to spend a pleasant afternoon out in the open air. However, you do need to be aware of the risks of being exposed to the sun for that length of time.

  • Wear a hat
  • Wear clothes that cover your skin
  • Wear a visor or sunglasses with UV protection
  • Use sunscreen with a SPF appropriate to your skin
  • Drink water to avoid dehydration

Handicap competitions

The club holds an annual handicap competition in addition to monthly handicap challenges throughout the summer season.

The club Records Officer keeps a record of all the scores for rounds that have been submitted (send him any score from rounds at other clubs or competitions) and from these he can determine you handicap. As your scores improve, so he will adjust your handicap downwards. Club handicaps for indoors and outdoors.

The GNAS handbook now contains the handicap tables. These give each archer an allowance for each round depending on your handicap. This allowance is added to your actual score. If you are shooting to the standard of your current handicap the total figure will total 1440 whatever round you have shot.
Example: An archer with a handicap of 40 shoots a Western round. He scores 700 points. The allowance is 720. 700+720=1420 so he shot just below his handicap. His friend with a handicap of 42 also scores 700. The allowance is 740. 700+740=1440. He shot above his handicap and so wins.
