Rod's Profile ~

Rod Boyers is a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants and a qualified teacher in Further Education. He’s married to Rosemari (graduated in 2001, star performer on the amateur stage with Wilton Productions) and has two children; Samantha (graduated in 2000, worked for the magazine 'Inside Soap' in London, wanted a 'change', so she’s now singing professionally on a cruise ship in the Caribbean~ what a life!) and Andrew (graduated in 2007 and having studied politics, he’s now working in the music industry in London!).

Yes, I enjoy a game of golf, whenever I’m able to, but I suffer with the 3 W's ~ Work, Wife and Weather! I prefer to play the larger courses, but regrettably, time is a major problem at the moment, so much of my golf is played at the Appleby Frodingham Par 3 Golf Course (a magnificent 18 hole course in the centre of Scunthorpe!).  We're involved, for the first time, in the HSBC Wee Wonders Championships for boys and girls aged 5 to 12; taking place at our course 28 and 29 May 2008.  This will be quite a prestigious event for us.

For many years, my main passion was motor sport, particularly stage rallying and F1. I was a founder member and first Chairman of South Bank Motor Club in Scunthorpe. Alas, I no longer do any rally driving, but I still love motor sport and have many memories and pictures. Here are just a few ~

Hemswell Airfield, Lincolnshire (before the markets arrived!)

 Hemswell Airfield again

Lotus Test Track, Norfolk

A farm track, somewhere near Boston, Lincolnshire

 Flying at Normanton Airfield, Newark!

I also enjoy (given the time!) amateur dramatics, tennis, table tennis, swimming, go-karting, football, astronomy, chess, snooker, cards, theme parks, museums, the Lake District, organising, writing, computing and almost any pudding with custard ~ sorry, but I'm not your typical, boring accountant!

Some years ago now, I used to run for fun, having completed the London and Humberside Marathons (please don't ask my times!) and many other half marathons, including the Great North Run. They were putting the bollards away, as I finished one race, but that's another story!! Unfortunately, a knee injury (or was it the beginning of self-assessment?), forced my early retirement! Now I mostly walk; hence the golf !

Turning to matters accounting, I started as a sole practitioner in 1977; albeit in a small way, dealing mainly with smaller businesses and providing out of hours visits at clients' homes, which I still do. My experience is varied; I worked for a large firm of chartered accountantsfor twelve years and then moved on to be a company and group accountant. During this time, I qualified as a further education teacher and taught book-keeping and accounts, for a number of years.

I believe I charge reasonable rates and try to use my experience to help in any accounting, or other way I can. People like lists, so here you are ~

Beware the Money Laundering Regulations and Proceeds of Crime Act, which are designed to fight major crime and terrorism; something we all fully and whole heartedly support.  In theory, however, not repaying that £2 you’ve been overpaid by your customer, or failing to correct a £1 VAT error straightaway, could be construed as an offence, with punishment ranging from fines to imprisonment.  The worst of it is, these 'offences' have to be reported by Accountants, without telling their clients.  If they did, they could be guilty of the criminal offence of 'tipping off' and also subject to fines, or imprisonment!  You'll appreciate that this is now an increasingly important area of compliance.

 Still under construction!!!
