Brewood and Coven Parish Council is delighted to announce that its application to the Staffordshire Environmental Fund for a grant towards the redevelopment of the Council’s playing field in Bishops Wood has been successful.

The grant of up to £23,897 from Staffordshire Environmental Fund, via the Landfill Communities Fund supported by Biffa, means the Parish Council and the Bishops Wood Park Committee can now proceed with the plan to replace much of the play equipment at the site.

The project has come to fruition through the work of the Bishops Wood Play Park Committee; a group  who came together following an initial meeting in March 2010 when local Member for Bishops Wood Mrs Jan Jeffries met with representatives of local organisations. The subsequent community consultation and meetings with equipment suppliers enabled the committee to identify the needs of the local community and make plans for future developments of the site.

Further funding has been provided by the Park Committee with a contribution in excess of £8,000 from monies distributed to it on behalf of Roseclaim; the balance of funding has been made available from the Parish Council. Chair of the Bishops Wood Park Committee Louise Shaw said 'The Park Committee would like to thank all parties involved in this exciting project, from its inception, using ideas provided by local school children and families, through to the funders, suppliers and contractors who have helped turn the vision into a reality.  The ongoing support of the Parish Council has been invaluable and we hope to see community members of all ages enjoying the new facilities.'

This £52,000 project will provide interesting and challenging facilities through this locally accessible play environment and in so doing, cater for the needs of the very young as well as the older children in the community. The new equipment will provide all ages, from 2 to 16 years, with a variety of equipment that will support creative play and risk-taking in a play area that represents a complete change from the equipment replaced.

The Parish Council is extremely grateful to the grant funders for their financial support of this project and for all the hard work undertaken by the Bishops Wood Park Committee, local residents and representative of Brewood Fire Fighters who worked so hard in July to get the park open for the school holidays. The support given by South Staffordshire Community and Voluntary Action to the Park Committee and in preparing the grant application is also greatly appreciated.

SKATEBOARD PARK

The Village also has a skateboard park adjacent to the village hall, maintained by the Parish Council.

WALKING
Walking is another leisure pastime well catered for in the Parish with many scenic walks to be enjoyed, including part of the noted Staffordshire Way, which runs through the Chillington Estate. To improve access several stiles in the village have been replaced with kissing gates through a grant provided by Staffordshire County Council. There are thirty-six miles of public rights of way in the parish. These are detailed on a definitive map which is available for inspection at the Parish Council offices.
