Fishing is available in the South Staffordshire & Worcestershire Union Canal, and also in neighboring reservoirs, lakes and pools.

The South Staffordshire & Worcestershire Union Canal crosses through Coven and this and the nearby Shropshire Union Canal are extensively used by pleasure craft. There is a wharf at the Anchor Inn and also a marina at Calf Heath where you could enjoy a pleasure cruise.

Walking is another leisure pastime well catered for in Coven with many scenic walks to be enjoyed. Regular footpath walks are organised by the Parish Council to cover the thirty-six miles of public rights of way in the parish. These are detailed on a definitive map which is available for inspection at the Parish Council offices.

“The Bront” a beautiful open space surrounded by woodland, a haven for wildlife. The River Penk meanders on its border acting as the boundary.

The Council has recently acquired an eight acre site alongside the River Penk at Coven. This beautiful area, locally known as the Bront, will be maintained as woodland and open space for public enjoyment. Members of the community have in recent years participated in a spring bulb planting scheme and it is hoped that the community will take an active role in planning its future. The Council is most grateful to the South Staffordshire Housing Association for its generosity in conveying this land for a nominal sum.

Coven Outdoor Education Centre

Laches Wood Centre

From April 2006, Coven OEC will be known as Laches Wood Family Learning and Outdoor Centre.  This exciting new facility for the whole community will provide residential courses for schools, early years, community and adult groups.

Artist's impression of the new building (opening 2006)

This new building provides an added dimension to Staffordshire Outdoor Education provision.  Over one million pounds is being invested on the site of Coven Outdoor Education Centre to provide a modern building in the rural landscape adjacent to Laches Wood.  The building will include family and single rooms, all with en-suite facilities, together with bedroom accommodation for school parties in rooms of 6 or 8.  Laches Wood will also considerably improve access to the outdoors for those with disabilities.

It is widely recognised that Family Learning improves the life chances of vulnerable children and in turn supports the five outcomes of 'Every Child Matters'.  It is envisaged that this new facility will enable parents and their young children to be given opportunities to learn together in a supportive, harmonious environment.  The Centre currently provides Forest School courses to promote this philosophy and the new facilities will enable these courses to reach a wider audience.

The new building will also provide an excellent venue for schools and other organisations wishing to use Laches Wood Centre for a variety of courses, in-service training and other events.
