History of the Central Bromley Methodist Churches
1770-2006
Religious non-conformity has a long history in the Bromley area.
Early 'Methodists' and other groups are recorded as being active in and around Bromley from the beginning of the 18th century.
John Wesley's first visit to Bromley, on 2nd December 1772, stimulated the formation of the first Methodist Church in the area, in Chislehurst Road, Widmore. This group eventually organised the building of the Church in Tylney Road.
The popularity and growth of Methodism and the growth of the local population in general led to the formation of a second group of Methodists, which became established in the Market Square/Upper High Street and later became established at the Methodist Church in the Lower High Street.
A division within the High Street Methodists produced the Methodist organisation centered on the Farwig Lane area, which grew into the Farwig Lane Mission and then into the Central Hall, London Road.
For many years these 3 limbs of Bromley methodism existed and prospered independently.
Sequential Town Centre developments and other factors eventually brought about a merger of the 3 Methodist groups
