My Favourite Hymns
'Lord, thy church on earth is seek' HP774
When we lived in Belize and John was a probationer we had a visit to the District by the President of the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas, the Revd. Hugh Sherlock. Hugh Sherlock was a Jamaican, in fact he had written the Jamaican National Anthem. He called on us for a short visit and my lasting memory is of this great man letting our 2 small children climb all over him, and crawling on all fours so that they could ride on his back - he was a big hit. This delightful man wrote the words to this hymn and I always think of Hugh Sherlock and the Caribbean when we sing it.
'Take this moment' Common Ground 122
I was visiting Iona when I first heard this hymn. I fact our daughter Emma was working there and was leading the Service. The words are beautiful and I particularly like the verse - Take the little child in me scared of growing old.' Quite appropriate as I have just retired.
'This, this is the God we adore' HP 277
We often sing this hymn at Covenant Services and large Methodist gatherings. It is short but powerful. The last lines are also very appropriate this year - 'We'll praise him for all that is past, and trust him for all that's to come.' I want this hymn at my funeral.
