My Favourite Hymns

How Shall I Sing That Majesty'  HP8

This great hymn by John Mason and based on verses from Psalm 104 and Psalm 139 speaks of the greatness and wonder of God which is beyond description, of the limited understanding of human beings, and of the reality of heaven. I find this hymn, especially when sung to the tune Soll's Sein, truly awe inspiring. Would that there were more like it.

Captain of Israel's Host  HP62

This is my favourite of all hymns. It is based on Exodus 13:21 and the pillars of cloud and fire by which God leads the Children of Israel to the Promised Land. In Charles Wesley's hymn the pilgrims have as their end the 'glory of the Lord,' are led by the Holy Spirit and accompanied by, 'love, almighty love.'  For me this hymn speaks powerfully of the pilgrim nature of the Church and of the immense grace of God. It is usually sung at the conclusion of meetings of the District Synod.

All Praise To Our Redeeming Lord  HP753

This hymn by Charles Wesley draws its inspiration from words of St Paul in 1 Corinthians 1 and 12, and in Ephesians 4. It expresses a warmth of fellowship, something of which I have been privileged to experience within the Methodist Church during my ministry, and the love and peace which come through Jesus Christ. We always concluded our weekly Class meeting at Cliff College by singing the first and last verses.
