School Savings Schemes

Blackburn, Seafield & District Credit Union started a savings scheme in Blackburn Primary School in 1996 and this has now extended to a further 8 primary schools and 1 secondary school. The Credit Union promotes savings schemes in school to teach our young people about planning their finances and then saving to achieve it. Some pupils are saving for holidays, Christmas presents or to go to school camp. Better financial education will help reduce financial exclusion and child poverty . West Lothian Credit Union Forum now delivers financial education sessions to both primary and secondary schools and BSDCU provides the practice by encouraging pupils to plan and save with their local credit union at school.

Saving regularly is the first step towards financial education and is one of the most important things we can teach our children. Encouraging them to save from an early age is the key to them becoming savers for life.
They can save from 10 pence upwards.

The Savings Schemes:

Mondays

Blackburn Primary, Murrayfield Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Polkemmet Primary

Tuesdays

Addiewell Primary, Falla Hill Primary (from 7th December 2010), St Thomas's Primary, Woodmuir Primary

Wednesdays Whitdale Primary, St Joseph's Primary
Thursdays Balbardie Primary, Burnhouse School, Our Lady's Primary, Whitburn Academy

Application cards for children wishing to join the Savings Scheme will be available on the morning of the school collection, at any Credit Union collection point or from our office Monday to Saturday (see Where we collect for times).

St Kentigern's Savings Scheme/Club is planned to start in February 2011.
