Visiting the Evros Delta

Travel

Olympic Airways run regular connecting flights to Alexandroupolis from Athens and Thessalonika.
Details of travel arrangements, accommodation and car hire can be obtained from Richard Brooks, who can arrange visits to the Evros Delta on a similar basis to his popular and successful birding trips to the Greek island of Lesvos. For further information, visit Richard's website at

Accommodation

Comfortable accommodation and excellent food are available all-year round at the Alexander Beach Hotel, which is a 15-minute drive across Alexandroupolis to the main Delta area. Discounted bookings can be arranged by Richard Brooks (see above). For details and photos of the Alexander Beach Hotel, visit

Access within the Delta

There is open access to a huge area of the Delta, where most of the wildlife can be seen. Parts of the Delta Reserve are officially out of bounds to visitors, although the local fishermen (and hunters!) seem to ignore this fact and come and go as they please. Guided trips into these parts of the Delta, including boat trips, may be arranged at the Evros Reserve Centre. The Centre can also arrange permits to visit the military zone, but visitors should apply well in advance!

At the time of writing (Spring 2004), the military presence in the Delta was virtually non-existent away from the two checkpoints, which are usually manned by one or two bored but courteous young soldiers, probably having drawn the short straw on their military service posting! Photography is officially prohibited in the military area, even though there is virtually no sign of military activity. The overall arrangements can only be described as typically Greek.

Evros Delta and Dadia Forest Reserves

The Dadia Forest Reserve area is home to over 30 of Europe's 38 breeding diurnal raptors. For more information about this superb raptor site, visit, e.g.:
