Mar 16th Band Thanks Eric!
ERIC CROSTHWAITE
Back in some part of 1967, or possibly before, a few colleagues, who worked for and were members of the social section of what was then the GPO, got together and decided to form a brass band. The results of these proceedings was the formation in 1967 of The Stockport Telephone Band.
The band has undergone a few name changes in its history since that formation. The POEU band, Post Office Engineering Union. The NCU band, National Communications Union. The BT band, British Telecom, and most latterly Stockport Brass.
One ever present feature of the band during all the past 41 years and name changes has been Eric Crosthwaite.
Eric has never been a playing member of the band but has been a member of, and headed up the back room staff, during all this period. He has overseen the management of many players, a few musical directors, many concerts and contests. He has arranged many coaches, hotels, venues, and the not to be forgotten, legendary hot pot suppers at Woodley Civic Hall.
Above all he has overseen the band progress to perform at the highest levels. He has worked tirelessly to strive to improve the band. He was a key member of the team who set up the sponsorship with BT, a sponsorship that lasted for 20 years.
The bands standing and consistent performances could not have been achieved without the work undertaken by the back room staff, and Eric in particular. Spending 20 years in the Championship Section including an unbroken spell for the last 16 years after winning the 1992 1st section National Championships in their 1st year of being introduced.
Like all good things however, they come to an end, Eric has decided it is time to retire from day to day involvement with management of the band, having retired from real work a few more years ago than he might care to remember, he always says he doesn’t know how he found time to go out to work.
Proof of that is his voluntary work with the North West Area brass bands, he has been officiating today. And with family with grandchildren who live a distance away, and other groups he is involved with organising, the word retirement doesn’t quite seem correct.
Stockport Brass would like to recognise the huge contribution Eric has made to the band and the brass band world. It is unusual these days to see such involvement for so long in the running of an organisation. His commitment, hard work and above all professional approach to it all has been much appreciated.
Thank You Eric from all current, past, and, we hope, future members of the band.
Jan 20th Band announce new signings
Stockport Brass are pleased to announce two major new signings this month. Firstly Matt Blunt has joined the Bass ranks joining on Eb Bass and also the band welcome Tom Swatland who joins on SoloTrombome from the Leyland band. Read all about Tom on his profile, Matts will be available shortly.
Dec 22nd Band play for County and Mayor!

The band have been busy this week raising the profile of the newly named Stockport Brass. Earlier in the week the band were fortunate enough to play for the Mayor of Stockport and just today, the band have been on centre circle at Stockport County entertaining the crowd for the game against Grimsby Town.
The band wil now be taking a well earned rest over the festive period and are looking forward to the new year in a new era for the band.
Dec 5th New name, new faces, and some old ones too!
The band are delighted to welcome back some old friends of the band and also some new faces. Firstly Steve Taylor returns to his chair on the back row and we are delighted Steve has decided to return to his roots and take up his old position. Also joining the vastly experienced back row is Holly Dolman who has decided to return to blowing following a period of partying!
Secondly, another old face returns in the form on Matt Jolly on Bass Trombone, Matt left the band over a year ago to pastures new, however, he has decided to come back to replace Shaun Farington who has been offered a conducting position. We wish Shaun all the best wagging his stick.
Finaly the band would also like to extend a warm welcome to Matt Blunt who has joined on Eb Bass. Matt is currently studying at Chethams School of Music.
Nov 22nd BT Band to rename
The BT Band is proud to announce that it will now be called Stockport Brass. The band has recently lost the sponsorship from BT and will perform under the new name following the Preston concert on the 7th December.
The band recently featured on Granada reports last Thursday to try and raise awareness regarding the current lack of sponsorship. If there is anyone that can help with sponsoring the band, please contact us

Stockport Brass with Granada TV presenter Paul Crone
Nov 12th 40th Band welcomes new additions
The BT Band would like to welcome 2 new additions to the ranks, firstly Marcus Jones, who had joined on Bb Bass. Marcus has a wealth of experience and has helped the band out on numerous occasions in the past. Also joining the band is Holly Dolman who joins the very experienced back row.
Both player profiles will be added shortly.
Nov 12th 40th Anniversary Reunion Party
The BT Band are looking for ex-members for their 40th Anniversary Reunion
Party on Friday 23rd November, to be held at the Great Moor Conservative Club in
Stockport.
There are many players who have played with BT in its various forms and moved on
to other bands around the country, and we would like to bring together as many
of these players as possible to reminisce and celebrate the past 40 years.
The band was formed in 1967 as the Stockport Telephone Band, later becoming the
Post Office Union Engineering Band, until sponsorship was taken over by BT in
1987. The band were the first ever 1st Section National Champions at the
inaugural contest in 1992, thus moving into the Championship Section where they
have remained ever since.
The band have so far celebrated their 40th year in terrific style, starting off
by winning Preston Contest in January, and continuing their contest achievements
with significant success at the Whit Friday marches.
The highlight of the year so far was the trip to the Isle of Man in October
where BT joined forces with the Onchan Band, who were celebrating their 70th
anniversary. The joint concert featured a world premiere of The Enigma Machine
by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, which was commissioned especially for the bands
anniversary, marking the involvement of the post
office workers in the war who helped to decode the enigma code.
Following the recent announcement of the loss of sponsorship, the BT Band would
like to show that they re very much alive and kicking!

Mar 22nd BT member to star in cult kids TV show
Band member Nigel Hughes said he was over the moon at being asked to star in the hit kids TV show from the 70's. Nige said although he was pleased at being ask, he was slightly disappointed that it wasn't the remake of the other classic kids TV show the Clangers, as he felt he would have suited that part more!

Mar 12th BT at the areas
The band entered the North West
regional area contest this weekend and finished a creditable, but slightly
disappointing 4th place. The band were in excellent form and put on a great
performance.
Special mention must go the guys that helped us out this weekend. Firstly Andy
Dellerman who played 2nd man and was fantastic. Kim Thorpe who stepped in in
place of Jamie on Solo Euph who put in an excellent display on the day with that
difficult solo. Then there was Steph Conway who played Solo Trom and did a
fine job, and last but not least, Craig Cubitt on percussion who was also great.

The band are sorry to lose the services of long term 1st horn player Claire Smith. Claire is moving away from the area to start a new family and this weekends contest at Blackpool was her last appearance in the blue BT jacket!
Everyone at the band wishes her well and would like to thank Claire for the enthusiasm and dedication she has shown over the past 8years she has been with the band, and she will be missed by everyone. Good luck Claire!!
Feb 5th Band take Brass at the Guild Crown
The band entered the 2007 Brass at the Guild contest and came away with the top prize. Below is a short report that appeared on the popular Brass band website 4barsrest;
"Those who admire the sound produced in a
receptive hall with a warm ambience will relish the prospect of hearing the
bands playing at the English National to be held at the Preston Guild Hall in
June later this year. At the close of the Championship Section adjudicator James
Scott spoke of his pleasure at the resurgence of lyrical playing that he had
heard at this contest.
As well as the need for technique, he added, he wanted to be 'moved' by a
performance and there was no doubt in his mind that BT Band conducted by Mike
Fowles provided that quality at this contest. Taking 'Partita' (Philip Sparke)
they led from Derwent Brass with 'Paganini Variations' (Philip Wilby). Keith
Leonard guided them in to the runners-up spot with Soprano Cornet Dai Roberts
collecting the best solo award."
The band celebrated in true style and many sore heads were around the next day; a full report of the days event will be available shortly.

Jan 26th; BT v's Faireys On 23rd January the 5-a-side teams of the BT and Fairey bands met at the JJB soccerdome for a Stockport derby (although it was suspected there were a couple of deps on the pitch). The BT side were supported by the WAGs (Women Astroturf Groupies) who occasionally gave a lame cheer when a goal was scored, but were too scared to cheer any louder in case the goalie directed his glares at us. We think the game was based on the 4-4-2 format that helped Utd to win the treble in 1999 when Alex Ferguson was in the box, I mean manager. The start was slower than the cornet section playing Cry of the Celts, but the BT side gained the edge after 20 minutes when the stamina of the Faireys side started to drop (BT were possibly helped by having 6 players, forcing them to take it in turns to have a rest). Bass player Graham Kean put the rest of our side to shame and saved us from humiliation by scoring 2 (might have been 3) goals. Pete did a great tackle and delivered a painful sounding kick at Fairey’s percussionist Haz, nearly joining Robbie Savage on the stretcher, and at one point BT had an impressive 8-4 lead (or it may have been 8-5, Renate kept losing score). However, the slightly more youthful Fairies side made a good recovery from a dodgy opening to equal the score, whilst the girls wondered whether the offside rule applies to 5-a-side, and it was a fight to the finish line (almost literally). Although Nigel vented his anger vocally the team stopped short of physical violence (shame, it might have given us a head start at this year’s areas). At the end we were informed that it was a 10-10 draw (we had lost interest by this point) and there was lots of hand shaking and rubbing of bruises. July 19th 2006; He's in the Army now! Its with great sadness that I have to announce that Gaz Wynne will be leaving the band at the end of August. Gaz has recently passed his musical audition to join the Army as a musician and will be starting with them on the 4th September. Gaz applied in May earlier this year having spent some time with the Grenadier Guards Band in London, where he had to go through a two day physical selection and medical as well as other types of tests, this was before getting to the musical audition which he took last week. Gaz will be missed on the front row of the band and hymn tunes will never be the same again without him. I'd personally like to thank Gaz for his assistance over the past years and I'm sure all the band wish him well in his new venture! Good Luck Gaz!
