Peter began playing the cornet at the age of 8 at the Great Moor junior school under the direction of Mike Greaves. Peter was also a member of the newly formed Stockport Schools brass band where he progressed onto Principal Cornet, a position he held until leaving school at 16. Peter was then also a member of the National Youth Band of Great Britain and the Poynton Junior band, where he eventually moved into the senior band sitting on the assistant principal chair next to his then tutor, Les Hall.

At the age of 17, Peter joined the Fairey Engineering band on the repiano chair, where he toured Hong Kong, Germany and Holland. At this time, Peter  was competing in solo contests, where he won the championship of Great Britain in 1983.

Peter left the Fairey band at the age of 18 making his first appearance on principal cornet for the then named POEU band (now BT Band). He stayed with the band for a number of years, helping the band move up through the sections from the 3rd section up to the championship section, where the band has been since. In this period, Peter was part of the 1992 1st section National Championship winning band under the direction of John Maines. During his time with BT, the band qualified from the Grand Shield under the direction of Graham O'Connor up to the British Open Championships and the band also gained entry into the All England Masters competition held in Cambridge.

Peter then made another return to the Williams Fairey Band in 2002, again occupying the repiano seat, where he stayed for 2 years. This time, he won the National Championships in the Championship section (2002 & 2003) under the direction of Allan Withington, this has been the only time the Williams Fairey Band (now Fairey FP Music band) have won the National Championships back to back.

Peter returned back to the BT Band in November 2003 as principal cornet and has since played to a capacity audience at this years Royal Albert Hall concert where he played the Harry James Trumpet concerto.

Peter often dept's for other top bands including the Yorkshire Building Society band and he also regularly plays for the Hogs Norton All Star Band.
