I started learning the trumpet at school in 1967.
Phil Miklejohn, who had to be the world’s expert at talking out of the
side of his mouth so he didn’t have to move the mouthpiece away from his
lips, taught me initially. How strange things make an impression on you
at such a very young age? Sadly, for me, looking at the other personnel in the current BT band, it looks like I am the only one who remembers what they were doing when President Kennedy got shot, or witnessed the England Team win the football World Cup. How strange things make an impression on you at such a very old age? My brass band playing career started in early 1968 with The Marple Band. Progressing rapidly I joined my first Championship Section Band in 1970, Mirrlees Works Band, appearing with them at the British Open and National Finals in 1971 at the tender age of 15. In 1974 I returned to the Marple Band to take up the position of principal cornet. A position I held for 3 years. In 1978 work took me to the midlands area, Worcester to be precise. Here I was a founder member of the Malvern Hills District Brass Band, later moving to spend a very enjoyable two years with The Yorkley Onward Band. Work back up t’North beckoned. On moving back I joined the famous CWS (Manchester) Band prior to joining the ranks of the Foden OTS Band. Various other bands including, Roberts Bakery, Bedford Leigh, Wingates, Laporte, eventually led me to join the BT Band in 1987. I have a couple of sabbaticals from banding probably lasting for about 3 years in the last 17. But, like The Terminator, “I’ll be back”. Since joining BT I have played every cornet position barring soprano. My one and only time on principal was due to a sting performed by the Principal Cornet (one Mr Peter Shaw) and the conductor of the time (one Mr John Maines) The band was playing in Mansfield, Pete had just come back off holiday and his lip wasn’t in (all say aaaawwwww), so the sting goes: - John keeps Steve talking whilst band goes on stage, Steve comes out and there’s only one chair left. Happy to say it went well, but I wasn’t after the job. I have just taken on some of the band management duties, being groomed for the time when the hand goes on the shoulder and they say to you “you must have been a good player in your time” how about being band manager?. Hopefully not for some time yet, enjoying my playing too much. I have also recently made my conducting debut with Thornsett Band. I would say it’s amazing what you can do in such a short time!!. Others in the band say you really can teach an old dog new tricks. Can’t sign off without mentioning other bands, apart from those above, I have had the pleasure of playing with as guest or signed player. Cheshire Youth (founder member), Thornsett, Whaley Bridge, High Peak Brass, Dove Holes, Glossop, Coleford, Burbage (Buxton), Tintwistle, Jones and Crossland, Flixton, Hawk Green(Marple), New Mills, and last but not least, Elmfield Brass
