General Membership Information
Typical launch scene during a flying day Membership entitles you to use all glider and club facilities. To become a club member, ask any current club member or contact the club. You can join on the same day as a trial lesson or at any other time. After paying subscription fees, you can start training at once (the first years membership and subscription fee can be paid by three post-dated cheques if you wish).

Who Can Become A Member?
Below the age of 16, no one is allowed to fly solo, but can fly accompanied if parental consent is given. Other than this, there are few restrictions. If you are fit to drive, you are normally fit to fly gliders. If in doubt, please ask. As a fully paid flying members, your spouse or partner becomes a social member of the club and is entitled to use all of the club facilities, except flying solo, although they are allowed to fly at club rates.

Members come from all walks of life, students through to computer programmers and teachers, and from as far as Bolton and Nottingham.

How Much Will It Cost?
It is a popular misconception that a heavily loaded wallet is an essential pre-requisite for any form of flying training. This certainly does pertain to powered flying club (where one hour of flying training costs in the order of £80-£90) and some gliding clubs, but is NOT true at Burn. The majority of work around the club and all flight instruction is done by members who do not get paid, and do it for the pleasure of the sport, which is why our costs are so low. After joining, your first 3 or 4 flights are recommended to be in the motor glider in approximately 30 minute sessions. After this you graduate to the two seater glider, launching by winch or by aerotow. You will typically have four flights a day (although this depends on the number of people wanting to fly and obviously your wallet).

There is no saying how many flights you will need before you go solo since it varies with each and every pilot, but on average, it takes between 40 and 60 winch launches.

Flying training is likely therefore to set you back around £300 to £400, after paying your subscription fee. But remember, this will be spread over a number of months.

Log Book and Other Materials
On payment of your membership fees, you will be issued with your Log Book (to record your flying time), the Modern Elementary Gliding book, and the reference manual indicating Laws and Rules for glider pilots. If you want to find additional material regarding gliding, many of the county libraries have information. If you want to read around before you start to fly, look out for books by Derek Piggot.
