50 Mile Challenge Trophies

Challenge Shield -

The shield was made by two of our loyal supporters - Roy Allison and Paul Brunton - both involved from the beginning. The shield is presented to the fastest team and overall winners

Robert Walters Trophy -

This trophy was donated in 1992 by another loyal supporter Catherine Goldstone. It commemorates the life of her father, Henry Robert Walters, who devoted his life to Scouting as Borough Commissioner for Haringey and Headquarters Commissioner for Rover Scouts. Presented to the overall runners up.

Novice Trophy -

The novice trophy was donated by Benson F Catt JP the County Commissioner for Greater London North at the birth of the event. Presented to the fastest team, none of whom have previously entered the 50 mile Challenge.

Grove Trophy -

This trophy, also made by Paul Brunton and Roy Allison, represents a pair of crutches. It is named after Lily and George Grove who were verderers of Scout Park in Wood Green, North London. Presented to the fastest team with an aggregate age of 130 years (whole years).

County Winners Trophy -

This trophy was made and donated by Paul Hayday a previous Assistant County Commissioner for Venture Scouts. Now presented to the fastest team from Greater London North not winning any other trophy.

Sharon Blower Memorial Trophy -

Donated by the 14th Southgate in memory of one of their team members. Presented to the fastest mixed team (any male/female combination)

Chief's Cup -
 
Named after Major General Sir Michael Walsh CB DSO, then Chief Scout, who presented the trophies at our 1983 event. The Chief specifically asked to present a trophy that recognised and encouraged teamwork. Presented to the fastest, all under 25yr old, team entering for the first time

 

50 kM Challenge Trophies

 

50Km Challenge Trophy - 

Donated by Steve Hagger, former secretary of the Southern 50 Committee. It is modelled on an old walking boot and represents the struggling walker's efforts. Presented to the fastest team and overall winners of the 50km Challenge

Ricky Bickley Trophy -

Donated by Ricky Bickley who has held many appointments over many years in Greater London North including Deputy County Commissioner until his retirement. Ricky was an active supporter of the event  always to be found on a checkpoint. Presented to the overall runners up in the 50km Challenge

Martin Hornsby Trophy -

This is in memory of Martin Hornsby who died in March 1999. Martin was a keen hill-walker and naturalist and a valued member of the organising committee. Presented to the fastest team whose ages total 200 years plus whole years (previously all over 50 years old) in the 50km Challenge

50k Novice Trophy -

A trophy which is presented to the fastest team, none of whom have entered the 50 mile or 50km event before

Chairman's Cup -

Donated by John Hall, long standing chairman of the Southern 50 committee. Presented to the fastest team who are all under the age of 25 years.

 

30 kM Challenge Trophies

 

Explorer Scout Challenge -

Presented to the runners up in the 30km Challenge

 

Other Trophies

 

Ladies Trophy -

The present ladies trophy signifies a 'trig point' and was made and donated by the team of Scouters from Romford. Now being presented to the fastest all female team completing the longest event (50 mile. 50km or 30km).
