How
can I help someone?
Information page
If you know someone who is experiencing domestic violence and would like
to discuss this in confidence, you or they can call the Broxtowe Women’s
Project on 01773 719111, Mon-Fri 10am-1pm (except Bank Holidays). We can also arrange a meeting
with an outreach worker in a safe and confidential place.
If someone confides in you that they are experiencing domestic violence
it is sometimes difficult to know how to respond. These are some basic
steps which you can take.
Believe them
Believe what they are saying, let them know this and take what they say
seriously.
Be understanding
Explain that there are many people in this situation, and acknowledge
that it takes strength to trust someone enough to talk about what’s
happening. Allow them time to talk, but don’t probe for details.
Try to ask questions which are not threatening and which encourage the
person to talk. Try not to ask questions which have "yes" and
"no" answers.
Be supportive
Reassure them that it’s not their fault and that they don’t
deserve to be treated in this way. Allow them to cry and express any hurt
and anger they may feel.
Let them make their own decisions
Do not make decisions for them, but allow them to make their own decisions
in their own time. Do not judge their choices or decisions, even if you
disagree with them.
If they have suffered physical harm
Acknowledge any injuries they have but do not assume the cause. Offer
to go with them to hospital/doctor if they need to go. You can also offer to
help them report the assault if they wish to do this.
Help them find professional help and information
Help them find information which will help them, and offer to go with
them to any appointments if this would help them. Let them know that they
don’t have to go into a refuge to talk to an outreach worker.
To make an appointment to see one of our outreach workers please phone 01773
719111
and she will arrange a safe and confidential place to meet. Top of page
Look After Yourself
Only offer as much help as is comfortable and safe for you. Don’t
forget there is professional support available.
Don’t put yourself in any dangerous situations.
Don’t try to sort out the problem for them, e.g. by going to talk
to the abuser.
Don’t let yourself be seen to be a threat to the relationship.
