Example 1 - Single Storey Multi-Span Retail Unit |
The main steel framed building measures 75m wide x 150m long x 10m mean roof height. Inside the main frame is a two-storey steel framed office and facilities block measuring 6m wide x 25m long which has two storey's of 3m height. Our client requires a budget estimate for the structural steel frame:- Our choice of framing for this project would be a three bay, UB section, portal frame with spans of 25m and a roof pitch of 10deg. Main frames would be spaced at 6m centres. The small office section would be framed with UB beams and UC columns on a 5m x 6m grid, secondary beams at either 2.5m or 3m centres may be used depending on the type of floor units used. Cold formed sections will be used for roof purlins and cladding rails. From the building weights table the type of structure will be Medium duty Multi-Span Shed for the main frame and Light Office for the internal facilities block. |
Volume of main building |
= 75m x 150m x10m |
= 112500m3 |
Volume of office and facilities block |
= 6m x 25m x 2No. x 3m |
= 900m3 |
Weight of, hot rolled, steel in main frame |
= 112500m3 x 5.5kg/m3 |
= 618750kg |
Weight of, hot rolled, steel in office block |
= 900m3 x 8kg/m3 |
= 7200kg |
Weight of, cold formed, steel in main frame |
= 112500m3 x 0.8kg/m3 |
= 90000kg |
Total weight of structural steelwork |
= 715950kg |
= 716 Tonnes |
For this type of structure in the UK a keen fabricator would probably quote a little under £1000 / t to supply, deliver and erect the building frame. So for our budget price we will assume £1000 / tonne. |
Total cost of structural steelwork |
= 716t x £1000 /t |
= £716,000.00 |

Notes 1. The table of building weights includes within it an allowance for fittings together with an equivalent weight allowance for bolts and welds, so these items do not need to be allowed for separately. 2. Rates per tonne for structural steelwork vary widely from one fabricator to another. Rates also vary up and down depending on the economic situation at the time. Once you have your estimated tonnages it would be well worth ring around a couple of fabricators to find out their latest rates. Don't forget to give your fabricator the tonnage breakdown and tell him that fitting, bolts and welds are allowed for in your tonnages. |
