Member Capacities
Steel section properties, capacities and resistances to BS5950-1: 2000 has now been published in an A4, 112 page, ring bound format. The publication comes with examples of use.
Most of the British Standard Sections are covered such as:- UB, UC, RSJ, PFC, UB Tees, UC Tees, Equal Angles, Unequal Angles, Hot finished and Cold formed CHS, SHS & RHS.
A number of format changes have been made in order to provide easier and faster access and use of the available data.
Dimensional Section Properties are in millimetre units, gone are those cm's!
Axial Compression and Bending are combined in one type of table instead of the traditional three tables. The new format allows instant access via the one table to axial, bending or axial + bending in combination.
A single table for web shear, bearing and buckling provides capacities for bearing and buckling for stiff bearing lengths of 0 to 200mm. This enables capacities to be read off directly, which is again a departure from the traditional method that required the user to carry out secondary calculations using coefficients.
The tables give capacity values for an extended range of member lengths, with lengths up to 20m being provided for in many instances. The CADOSS 'CD' provides capacities for any intermediate length of member, which will avoid the need for interpolation between tabulated values, values outside of the tabulated range are also available.
Design examples are provided with the tables, these help to clarify use of the tables and the proper use of BS5950!
Capacities for member slenderness exceeding 200 are shaded in order to flag up this important warning, and capacities for member slenderness greater than 350 are zeroed for additional safety.
A sample of some of the tables is shown as follows: -
