West Penwith

West PenwithThis area of Cornwall known as the West Penwith abounds in interesting things to do.

St Just the most westerly town in England has a history made up from mining tin and there are many reminders of that past in the area.

The scenic route from Pendeen to St Ives is one of the most spectacular in the country.

You pass on the way the Village of Zennor, with its Folk Museum and the Church of St Senara, where it is told that a Mermaid used to come to worship and fell in love with a young man who sang in the choir, and whom she took back to the sea to live with her.

Once in St Ives, you can explore the quaint streets browsing, the shops and galleries including the famous Tate Gallery, and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Many famous artists make their homes here in Penwith as they did in the past. Newlyn also has connections with the art world as well as being a thriving commercial harbour. Further on is the picturesque little village of Mousehole.

Visit St Michael's Mount or Penzance with its busy harbour and shopping centre.

There are many beaches in the area for surfing or just lazing, Sennen and Porthcurno to name but a few.

You can take boating or fishing trips from Penzance or St Ives, cycle, take a bus ride or enjoy a round of golf at Cape Cornwall Golf Club.

Spend an evening at the Minack open air Theatre which is set in the cliffs overlooking the sea. Stroll around Lands End, or even take a day trip to the Isles of Scilly by boat, helicopter or Skybus.

This is only a small account of what is on offer, and if after this you are hungry - well there are many and varied places to eat as local fresh food is on offer everywhere.
