Bells

  

The information contained in this page has been extracted from a number of sources, primarily from a framed parchment which hangs on the wall of the Ringing Room, and also from the Bristol Rural Branch website. The parchment was kindly donated in 1992, after the bells were recast, by Trevor Vaughan, the grandfather of one of our present band of ringers.

This framed parchment has been reproduced below, as exactly as possible within the constraints of a web page. The weights of the bells (three numbers, separated by ~ symbols) are given in the British imperial units of Hundredweights (cwt), Quarters (qtr) and Pounds (lb). Therefore the Tenor (the heaviest) bell weighs 7cwt 1qtr 16lb. To give you some idea of the weights of the bells, the table below gives some comparisons, along with their metric equivalents:

The present ring of eight bells was recast from the previous, heavier ring of eight, by John Taylor in June 1992.

Treble ~ Mary  ~  2 ~ 2 ~ 20 in B.
Antony Jefferies Restoration Chairman.
 
2nd ~ David  ~  2 ~ 3 ~ 21 in A#.
Ryan Price Tower Captain.
 
3rd ~ Gabriel  ~  2 ~ 3 ~ 25 in G#.
These bells were given, long therefore may they sound.
 
4th ~ Augustine  ~  3 ~ 0 ~ 20 in F#.
In Ringing Changes And in Ringing Round.

We four bells were made to six 1687.

We were recast to make us eight 1920.
