The Myths Exploded |
Q. You need lots of money to do target shooting, don’t you? A. No. Your first visit is free, then you pay £3 per night plus ammunition. Most newcomers start off by using 0.22 rifles, for which the price of ammunition is £1.50 per 50 rounds. |
Q. I’ve heard you need lots of expensive kit, is this true? A. Certainly not. LRPC has an extensive range of club firearms and accessories which you can use free of charge for as long as you are a member. |
Q. Don’t you need to have natural ability to be a good shot? A. Natural shots are extremely rare. Like most other sports, ability comes with practice. LRPC offers the facilities, help and guidance for you to excel if you want to. |
Q. I suppose target shooting is a male preserve! A. Absolutely not. Target shooting is only one of a handful of sports where men, women, able bodied, disabled, the old and the young compete on equal terms. |
Q. Won’t I need a Firearms Certificate before I can shoot? A. No. You are covered by an exemption in the Firearms Act which allows members of shooting clubs to be in possession of club guns without the need for a certificate. Of course, once you become a full member, we encourage you to apply for one – and will give you every assistance in that application. |
Q. Iv’e been told that target shooting is a very ‘elitist’ sport. A. Absolutely untrue. LRPC club members come from all walks of life, and a friendlier bunch of people you could not wish to meet. If you come to visit us, you will be made very welcome. |

| Due to overwhelming demand, we have decided to suspend further additions to our waiting list until a considerable backlog has been cleared, and we estimate that this will take approximately 6 months. |
| When the list has been cleared, we intend to run a series of 'Open Days' as a way of inducting keen people into our probationary programme. |
| Please keep an eye on our website where, in due course, we will announce details of our Open Days. We have implemented a system to allow you to sign up to get an email alert when we are to have an Open Day, if you wish to be alerted then please fill out the form at the bottom of this page. |
| In the meantime, you may like to make enquiries to the National Rifle Association at Bisley about other clubs in your area. The NRA is the governing body of fullbore target shooting in the UK. The NRA website address is www.nra.org.uk and is well worth looking at. |
| You could also ask the NRA about their 'Open Days'. This is when you can shoot at Bisley as a non member under an exemption. You could also enquire about other clubs 'Guest' days which are different to NRA open days but fulfil basically the same function. Information on 'open days' and 'guest days' can be found on the NRA website. |
| The next NRA open day is on September 8th, please click on link below for further details |
