Softball sessions take place on a Monday night during the summer, between 6 and 7:30pm, starting on 18 April 2011. Boys and girls in school years 2, 3 or 4 i.e. under 9 on 31st August 2010, are welcome to attend. If you are new to the club please e mail details to Graham Smith.
The softball sessions have a number of aims:

  • To introduce children to the fun of playing cricket.
  • To teach fundamental movement skills - Agility, Balance,Coordination, Speed, as well as running, jumping and throwing.
  • To teach basic batting, bowling and fielding techniques.
  • To provide the grounding necessary for children to play hard-ball cricket in the under 11 team and onward.

There will also be an introduction to competitive cricket for the under 9s, in the form of softball cricket festivals on a Sunday morning. Players selected to play in these festivals will usually be informed on the preceding Monday.

In order to provide a safe environment for the children we need to have information about participants. A registration form can be downloaded by clicking here and should be completed and returned to the coach with a cheque for £30. An attendance register will be taken at the start of each

session and those children who have not paid subs by the end of May will not take any further part.

Included with the registration documents is information regarding conduct expected of players and parents. While this is primarily aimed at older children competing in the under 11 league and above, it is expected that all children attending for coaching will maintain a reasonable standard of behaviour and heed instructions given by the coaches. This is primarily to ensure the safety of all present. Repeated misbehaviour is not acceptable and if warnings are not heeded, the child will not be permitted to return.

There are no specific kit requirements for the Monday night sessions and the only equipment that it might be worth having is a cricket bat. However, it is expected that players representing the club in the under 9 festivals will wear white kit. A cricket cap must also be worn on these occasions, as protection from the sun and St Fagans’ caps are available on request. Sunscreen must also be worn.

If you are buying a cricket bat please make sure it is not too big. Click here for a guide to bat sizes based on a child's height.

If you are wanting more information, please contact Graham Smith or Phil Makinson.
