World Oral Health Day

The Commonwealth Dental Association supports World Oral Health Day

The CDA is supporting World Oral Health Day 2011 (12 September), which is focusing on non-communicable diseases. The event is coordinated by the International Dental Federation (FDI), of which the CDA is an associate member.
The CDA supports the FDI in calling for a stronger focus on oral diseases in policy making around NCDs ahead of a UN General Assembly Summit on the issue that takes place in New York next week (19 and 20 September 2011). The event will focus on the growing health and economic impacts of NCDs. The FDI, which represents more than a million oral health professionals worldwide, is calling for a clear recognition of oral conditions among the global NCD priorities and a strengthening of the role of dentists and the dental team in preventing them.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the world is seeing a growing epidemic of non-communicable, or chronic, diseases (NCDs), and they are currently one of the leading causes of premature deaths worldwide. World Oral Health Day 2011 is focusing on these conditions because oral diseases and other NCDs share many common risk factors including tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol and over-consumption of sugar.
Further details about World Oral Health Day and campaigning activities for it are available at:

Commonwealth
Conversation
In preparation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in November this year, and to review the first sixty years of the modern Commonwealth and to look forward to the next sixty years, the Royal Commonwealth Society is conducting a survey to ask how the Commonwealth can add value to the international community in the 21st century.
The Commonwealth conversation can be found here: Click on:  The Commonwealth Conversation.
It consists of only ten questions and takes around ten minutes to complete. The purpose of the conversation is to:
* Gather the opinions of individuals and organisations across the world about the Commonwealth.
* Identify key issues of international concern on which the Commonwealth should focus.
* Help re-vitalise the Commonwealth and re-connect it to a new generation.
* Present key recommendations to Commonwealth leaders and policy makers.
* Raise awareness about what the Commonwealth is and does.

CDA MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO VISIT THE WEBSITE AND COMPLETE THE SURVEY.

Julia Campion

"It is with deep regret that CDA announced the death of the former Administrator, Mrs Julia Campion, on 9th November 2007 after a short illness.

Julia had worked as an administrator with ABC Television, the International Labour Office in Geneva, the BBC and the Royal College of Music. She had been associated with the Commonwealth Dental Association since its inception and became the CDA Administrator in 1994. For many years she had been indirectly connected with dentistry since her husband’s father, grandfather and great grandfather were all dental surgeons and the latter two had been presidents of the BDA in their time.
Julia was the main contact person for the CDA.

Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM)
Geneva – Sunday 15 May 2005
The Commonwealth Dental Association was represented at the Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM) in Geneva on 15 May 2005. This meeting, organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat, is held annually in Geneva the day before the World Health Assembly (WHA) commences. It is the only meeting in the year when Health Ministers from the Commonwealth countries meet together and discuss important health issues. The CDA’s activities during the period March 2004 to February 2005 featured prominently in the paper ‘Actions on Health Priorities 2004/2005’, distributed for the meeting by the Commonwealth Secretariat. These particular activities, in conjunction with the FDI World Dental Federation and the Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) relate to the Agenda for CHMM. The CDA’s participation in this meeting gives us the opportunity to interact and speak personally with many Ministers and/or their senior officials and keep the FDI and OSAP on the radar screen of this influential group of Ministers of Health. It shows the value of building alliances with other organisations. 15/05/2005

CDA/Caribbean HIV/AIDS Seminar and CDA General Meeting
Saturday 27 August 2005
09.00 - 17.00 hrs
Room 519B, Palais des Congrés, Montreal, Canada
The CDA held, on 27 August 2005, an HIV/AIDS Seminar for the Caribbean Region during the FDI World Dental Congress in Montreal; this was spearheaded by Dr Joyous Pickstock (CDA Regional Vice-President for the Caribbean Region). A buffet lunch was provided and the afternoon session consisted of feedback from the participants on the seminar and a CDA General Meeting.
HIV/AIDS is one of the most devastating health and development crises of the past 50 years. Since the first clinical evidence of AIDS was reported over two decades ago, the disease has spread to much of the world. In the Caribbean HIV/AIDS has become the major cause of death among adults under the age of 45. Official figures show more than 360,000 Caribbean people living with AIDS, but estimates place the number at over 50,000 due to underreporting. More than 80,000 children have been orphaned by the epidemic, and the infection rate is estimated to have reached 12% in some urban areas, spreading in many countries from high-risk groups to the general population.
The Purpose of the seminar for Oral Health Personnel was to heighten the awareness of HIV and AIDS related issues in the Caribbean Region.
The Aim of the seminar was to disseminate the latest research, especially in relation to the oral manifestation of AIDS and HIV.
The Objectives at the end of the seminar were:
• To train a group of oral health personnel who would be able to teach and train others in the areas of oral manifestations and universal precautionary measures.
• To foster collaboration and communication throughout the Caribbean among Oral Health Personnel.
As a follow-up to the Montreal workshop the Bahamas Dental Association, during their conference (10-12 November 2005) held a half-day HIV/AIDS symposium for dental health professions. The main topics included 'Oral Manifestations of HIV/AIDS and its Pathogenesis'.
This symposium was attended by over 60 participants including Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Technicians, Assistants and Office Managers.
More workshops on the topic of HIV/AIDS have been planned throughout the region to sensitise all oral health professionals on the disease which is rampant throughout the Caribbean.

Global Health – Networking for Better Outcomes
Tuesday 22 November 2005 at 11.30 to 16.00 hrs
Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, Malta
For the first time, the Commonwealth Dental Association (CDA) joined with three other health Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) - the Commonwealth Nurses Federation (CNF), the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association (CPA) and the Commonwealth HIV/AIDS Action Group/Para55 – in organising a seminar at the Commonwealth People’s Forum, which preceded the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), in Valletta, Malta. This seminar reflected the theme of CHOGM ‘Networking Commonwealth People’ and the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) ‘Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Other Diseases’ and comprises:
• Session 1: HIV/AIDS – Access to Treatment and Care which will focus on Access to Treatment and Care and Palliative Care.
• Session 2: Migration of Health Workers – The Global Impact focussing on A Developing World Perspective and A Developed World Perspective.
The outcome from this Symposium was written up immediately it ended in the form of a Communiqué to go to the Foreign Ministers’ meeting on 23 November in Malta and then to the Commonwealth Heads of Government at their meeting. It was anticipated that the Communiqué will also go to the Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting when they met in Geneva in May 2006.

CDA Pacific Regional Meeting
Friday 25 to Wednesday 30 November 200
Tradewinds Hotel & New Fiji School of Medicine Complex - Fiji
The formation of the Commonwealth Dental Association’s Pacific Region in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2003 stimulated enthusiasm for a coordinated approach to oral health in the Pacific Region. Since the meeting in Nairobi, the role that dental associations can contribute to improve the struggles in oral health in the Pacific was realised. Establishing contacts from countries in the Pacific was a priority and this was a slow and difficult task. However, once contacted, there was a unanimous decision to work together as a Region. The Pacific Region consists of small island nations widely dispersed and surrounded by ocean. Communication through telephone is quite expensive and not all are accessible to a computer or internet. Therefore it was considered important to hold a meeting of representatives from the region. This meeting would bring together and hear the views from the various countries which will then formalise a committee and a Plan for Oral Health. As well as business matters, issues to be covered and discussed will be the Role of Dental Auxiliaries; Planning for Pacific Oral Health; Oral Cancer in the Region; Tobacco Control; HIV and Oral Health. If you would like to participate please contact Temalesi King (CDA Regional Vice-President, Pacific) tkin3866@mail.usyd.edu.au 14/06/2005

‘Tomorrow’ looked to the future, attempting to chart the way forward bearing in mind the new developments that are likely to influence the strategies for oral health care, dental education and the practice of dentistry. The presentations highlighted the science underpinning the new advances and their likely impact. The day ended with a panel discussion.

CDA Statement on Sugar and Dental Disease

The Commonwealth Dental Association in response to the WHO consultation on Nutrition and Chronic Disease issues the following statement on the impact of the consumption of refined carbohydrates including sugars on the prevalence of dental diseases, particularly dental caries. The statement emphasises that it is the frequency of consumption rather than the amount which affects caries levels.
"The limitation of frequent exposure to refined carbohydrates and the use of fluoride in toothpaste are the two most effective measures for the prevention of dental caries."
