Development of the Sloane Square area began when Sir Hans Sloane acquired the Manor of Chelsea in 1712 for a 'country retreat'. The composition of Sloane Square reflects this wonderful period in history. Houses and buildings in the area, many by Henry Holland, master builder and son-in-law of Capability Brown, are famous for their distinctive and progressive design and stonemasonry.
Sloane Gardens offers many opportunities to see this style of architecture, including the building occupying 51 – 53. In March 2006 C&D Restoration were employed to complete the full restoration to the exterior of these two residential town houses. Front Façade Chemical cleaning took place to the whole of the buildings brickwork - front and rear. C&D used the specialist JOS/TORC cleaning system to clean Terracotta porticos. C&&D then cut back and restored all of the moulded brick cornices, terracotta stonework and damaged brickwork. The pointing to all cornices and terracotta stone was restored using colour additives to match the original style. Further works included:
All brickwork pointing was raked out and replaced. Damaged brickwork was carefully removed and replaced, ensuring that the integrity of the façade was maintained. All blown render and plinth detail was removed and replaced. Interior C&D rebuilt and replaced all damaged brickwork to the stairwell. |
