Fighting Fitt

"Lord Gerry Fitt was one of the most colourful and courageous politicians ever to parade the British and Irish political stages. Fighting Fitt charts his personal and political life all the way from the Belfast Workhouse to the House of Lords.

Born to an unmarried servant girl, he was adopted by the Fitt family. After service on the Russian convoys during World War Two he went on to became a Belfast councillor and an MP at Stormont and Westminster before becoming a Lord in 1983.

This biography recounts his major political triumphs: breaking the pre-Troubles convention that Northern Ireland affairs were never discussed at Westminster and leading the SDLP into a power-sharing government in 1974, the first time a nationalist leader ever held office at Stormont.

Gerry Fitt attributed much of his political success to the wise counsel and support of his beloved wife, Ann, and the book charts the course of their romantic partnership and the desolation Fitt felt when she died before him.

Based on extended interviews during his lifetime and drawing from official government and parliamentary records, Fighting Fitt is a tribute to a remarkable life of distinctive achievement, vision and extraordinary personal courage in the face of political intransigence and terrorism."
