The Trouble with
Midges….
Many years
ago, my husband was camping in Scotland in a spot notorious for midges. He was
bitten and the bite became infected. He left the camp to go walking with a
friend and as the infection became worse and his leg became sorer, he began to
limp. Over time, this caused an imbalance in his posture, searing pain and a
slipped disc.
So, a small problem, resulting in adaptations,
led to complete immobility and the need for treatment.
This to me
is a picture of the difficulties which can happen in families.
For
example, Esther and James sought help with their 6-year-old son Michael, who
was having terrible tantrums.
The couple
had had difficulties ever since his birth, as Esther was preoccupied with him
to the exclusion of her husband. His sense of being left out, tied in with the
financial demands of adding a child to the family, meant that he withdrew
somewhat and worked longer hours.
When
Michael’s behaviour became so bad that it was socially unacceptable, the couple
had lost their ability to work together on the problems and found themselves
constantly arguing.
So, the Problem – coping with a new baby in the
couple relationship
Led to the Adaptation- mum becomes preoccupied and
dad withdraws
Resulting
in Immobility at a later time – the
child is excluded from school, and the couple does not know what to do – enter
the family therapist.
The family
therapist does not look at the child in isolation, but brings the family
together to look at what is going on between them and works with them to find
solutions.
