LEISURE
The Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful for your child to
be descriminated against just because of their disability. You
have the right to challenge this and advice is available from
the Disability Rights Commission at www.drc-gb.org.uk
or the Citizen's Advice Bureau at www.adviceguide.org.uk
KidsOut gives grants to fund specially designed toys, terrain buggies,
fun days out, holidays and short breaks for both parents and
disabled children. Their helpline is good at signposting

HOSPITAL STAYS/DISCHARGE
The Children Act 1989 entitles children with ongoing medical or support
needs to an essessment of need. Alongside this you should ask for
an assessment of your needs as a carer. Discharge planning is about putting
together a care package to meet all these needs. Agreeing to who is
responsible for funding nursing care, training, equipment, aids and
adaptations at home can be complex and take time. So it is worth
checking that your child's community nursing team are anticipating
their needs early on. Check with the nursing team in hospital that
your discharge plan is in place.
