The building was originally a Co-operative Department Store, which for a short time became The Pack Horse Hotel, before being given its present name. The new Licensees, John Taylor & Suzy Bell, were previously tenants of The Sun Inn at Flockton, Wakefield, and later the Red Lion Inn, at Jackson Bridge, near Holmfirth. John is passionate about his beer and is known for keeping an excellent cellar, with Cask Marque accreditation in both previous pubs. In their first pub, they introduced over 70 guest ales over a period of 12 months. They are both members of CAMRA, and their hard work was rewarded whilst they were in the Red Lion, by entries into 'The Good Beer Guide', 'The Good Pub Food Guide', and their being awarded the local 'Summer Pub of the Season in 2004'. The Wharfeside is a busy village pub, serving excellent food, which is cooked by their two experienced chefs, and well-kept Copper Dragon Ales, and a good selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks. The pub has a large split level bar area with pool table, a separate 30-cover Restaurant, where John & Suzy are hoping to introduce theme food nights, as well as a self-contained function room with seating for 120, which is currently used by locals for family parties such as Christenings, etc. These facilities will also be available for conferences and training. The Wharfeside Inn also has 6 letting rooms which all have excellent en-suite facilities.
