November 2005
Birkenhead Beer Festival was a success for all including Copper Dragon, where we were nominated Best Brewery of the Festival. This recognises that our Brewery received more votes in total for our beers than any other Brewery. Scott’s 1816 came in joint 3rd and Black Gold 7th in Festival.

One of the most famous pubs in Halifax, the Shears inn, is now a proud member of Copper Dragon Brewery's estate.

the shears inn, halifaxKathryn and Dean are the welcoming hosts at the Shears inn, a real hidden gem that has been described as Halifax’s best kept secret. Long famous for its unique character, the inn displays many pictures of old Halifax on its walls, a charming paved outside area with garden furniture and parasols is an added attraction. Open all day, every day, Shears is a great place for lovers of real ale.

Tucked away among some of the city’s fine old heritage mill buildings, Shears Inn is a treasure that once found has for many become a lifelong friend.

charity event at the white lion
rob cowen performs for the crowd

The White Lion Inn held a charity event on Sunday, September 11, to raise much needed funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Entry was by ticket only and limited to 40 people but those that did attend were treated to a fantastic night of food, music and 'not a little' good beer. Following an auction, assistance from Copper Dragon Brewery and a donation by The White Lion we raised just short of £1,500 for this much needed cause.

One of our regulars, record producer Richard Dover, arranged the event and provided much of the musical entertainment with assistance from his Stubborn Records co-director, Chris Spencer. One of their young artists, Rob Cowen also performed a couple of tracks from his recent album 'The Other' with further contributions from Blues guitarist Jacky Sanders who flew in from his home in Geneva for the event.
A good time was had by one and all!

The annual Trawden Agricultural Show is held on the second Sunday in August. One of the largest one day shows in the North. It features sheep, cattle, heavy horses and rural crafts. There is a sheep-dog trial, a dry-stone walling competition, light horses, a dog show and many other attractions making it an ideal family day out. The Trawden Show is organised entirely by volunteers from the local community. Everyone is welcome to attend the committee meetings which take place at The Sun Inn on the second Tuesday of each month.

Two beautiful Brewster’s joined the team at Copper Dragon for a brew day. Angela Salloway & Janet Leigh. Angela from Bury said how impressed she was, she had not appreciated just how involved the art of real ale brewing was. Janet from Ramsbottom, Lancashire who has visited several times previously was already aware of the complexities and dedication required. An excellent day was had by both of them. The girls are now confirmed Golden Pippin fans, Seen leaving the brewery in style.

We are pleased to report that Hamlet, the black Labrador/retriever cross guide dog puppy, who was a regular visitor to the Copper Dragon Brewery has almost finished his advanced training and will soon be paired with his new partially sighted owner.

It is 7 months since he left Todmorden (aged 12 months) and his puppy walkers Dave & Sheila Towler, to go to Bolton for the next stage of his training. He did well and went on to do advanced training at Helsby near Chester. We heard recently that he has found a suitable partner and the two of them will train together before Hamlet moves in with his new owner.

Hopefully his new life will include an odd trip to the local pub, as the Masons Arms in Todmorden which was one of his favourite training grounds! In the meantime, Kane a yellow Labrador is following in his footsteps and will hopefully be as successful as his predecessor.

Rossendale Rugby Union Vets made an unexpected visit to the Masons Arms, Todmorden. Fifteen members celebrated in style drinking Copper Dragon’s Best Bitter, as you can see from the jpg they thoroughly enjoyed their summer Insurgence, an annual event. Wearing full Lancashire working men’s clothes; clogs, cords, Grandad shirts, waist coats, gal laces, neckerchiefs, belts and flat caps- a real sight to be seen. The gentleman in the bowler hat is known throughout Lancashire as 'Tommy Two Tries' (work that one out for yourselves).

This policy allows the Lessee to invest and develop the business in a sensible manner, with little interference from the brewery.
