The title of the Royal Shepherd is in honour of George III, who reigned from 1760-1820. hew was respnsible for the introduction of the Merino sheep from Spain.This particular sheep was also known as the Golden Fleece, and the Independent order of the Golden Fleece founded the Royal Shepherd Lodge in Skipton in 1842. It is the ONLY pub with this name in the country.
