Lanark, host to the first Scottish Parliament in 978, is a
busy market town in the Upper Clyde Valley. The town was created a Royal Burgh
by King David the First in 1140. The area has seen royal patronage down through
the centuries, the Royal Palace having stood at the foot of the Castlegate.
William Wallace resided in Lanark for a number of years and a commemorative
plaque, showing the location of his house, is sited at the foot of the High
Street. In 1369 the town was given the responsibility of looking after the
stone weights of Scotland, emphasising the town's stature in the nation.
In a deep gorge by the River Clyde, about one mile from the town, lies New
Lanark, best known for the philanthropic works of Robert Owen. Whilst the
mills are no longer operating, New Lanark attracts many visitors each year
to the restored buildings and visitor centre.
