Here are some top tips for managing your money:

  1. Have a careful look at your weekly shopping.  Are there less expensive brands or money saving offers you could take advantage of?
  2. Before buying a takeaway, check your fridge first!  Otherwise you are throwing money into the bin along with the contents of your fridge.
  3. If you have a bank account, you may get a discount by paying your bills by direct debit or standing order rather than by cash or cheque.
  4. Don't be scared by money matters.  You can find out more by reading the money pages of newspapers or watching personal finance programmes.
  5. Shop around different companies to find ways of reducing your regular payments on gas, electricity, the phone and insurances.
  6. If you can afford to pay for your goods outrght, don't be persuaded to take out credit unless it really does work out to be cheaper.
  7. Be wary of interest free deals on new products.  They are only interest free if you pay them off within the agreed time limit.  If you miss the deadline, intereste free can become very expensive.
  8. If you are offered optional insurance to cover your payments, think carefully about whether you need it at all - you may already have cover on an existing policy.
  9. Try to pay off debts with the highest interest rate first (while still paying the minimum on your other debts and paying priority bills such as the mortgage and council tax.)
