Acanthus	spinosus	From the handsome deeply cut, glossy green leaves, rise stately stiff stems 1.2m(4ft) in height. Purple hooded, white-lipped flowers in late summer. The flower heads form an attractive winter feature. Prefers a good fertile soil in sun or part shade
Achillea	'Moonshine'	Beautiful silver-grey, feathery foliage. Branching stems with bright yellow stems in midsummer. Height 60-65cm.
Achillea	'Paprika'	Deep, fiery red. Height 60cm (24")
Achillea	'Summerwine'	Slender branching stems carry lacy clusters of rich, deep claret flowers, fading to soft pink, giving a two-tone effect. Height 75 -90cm.
Achillea	Walter Funke	Terracotta coloured flower heads, green feathery leaves. Spreading habit but not invasive. Full sun and well-drained soil. Divide regularly to maintain vigour. Height 60cm(24").
Aegopodioum	podagraria 'Variegatum'	Attractive form of the common 'Ground Elder'!! Beautiful cream and green leaves, will brighten a dull shady corner. Tolerant of any soil or site. Effective and more controlled when used in pots. Height 30cm(12")
Ajuga	reptans 'Atropurpurea'	Good evergreen ground cover. Bronze-purple foliage provides an excellent setting for the spikes of blue flowers in summer.
Ajuga	reptans 'Multicolour' or 'Rainbow'	Easy to grow evergreen carpeter which will form a dense weed proof ground cover. Prefers a good moisture retentive soil in sun or part shade. Multicolour leaves marked with cream. Small light blue flower heads 15cm (6") in early spring/summer.
Alchemilla	alpina	Fully hardy perennial. Bears sprays of tiny, greenish-yellow flowers with conspicuous outer calyces in summer. Rounded lobed pale green leaves are covered in silky hairs. Suitable for ground cover or a bank. Height 15cm. Spread 60cm. Any reasonable soil in sun or shade.
Alchemilla	conjuncta	A smaller version of Lady's Mantle. Neat, wavy star shaped leaves with pale margins. Loose clusters of tiny, greenish-yellow flowers with conspicuous outer calyces appearing in mid summer. Height and spread 30cm(12")
Alchemilla	mollis	Rounded, velvety, pale green leaves with crinkled edges. Bears small sprays of tiny, bright greenish-yellow flowers, with conspicuous, outer calyces. Height 45cm (18"). Sun or shade, in a well-drained soil.
Allium	schoenoprasum	Small clump forming onion, producing masses of sweet onion flavoured leaves and pink balls of flowers on long stalks in summer. Both flowers and leaves are edible.
Anemone	x hybrida 'Richard Ahrens'	A useful clump forming, deciduous hardy perennial. Semi-double deep pink flowers during August - November. Any ordinary garden soil that is not too dry in sun or shade.
Anemone	x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert'	A very old variety - pure white flowers with yellow stamens. Contrasting with the very dark green leaves. Height 90cm(36").
Anemone	x hybrida 'Whirlwind'	Spreading plant bearing white, semi-double flowers between mid-summer and autumn. Prefers moist, humus rich soil in sun or partial shade. Height 75-90cm..
Aquilegia	'William Guiness/Black Barlow	One of the darkest flowering Aquilegia available - outer petals dark purple, almost black with a white centre. Flowers have long spurs. Flowering May-July and growing up to 50cm(20"). Very unusual. Any well drained soil that does not dry out. Sun or part shade.
Artemisia	ludoviciana 'Silver Queen'	White Sage. Silvery-white willow like leaves. Slender plumes of tiny yellow/white flowers appear in July/August. Decorative flower stems if dried. Spreads to form good sized clumps which act as a good weed block!
Artemisia	pontica	Vigorous, upright perennial with aromatic, feathery, silver green foliage and tall spikes of small, greyish flower heads in summer. Height 45cm(18")
Artemisia	‘Powis Castle’	Forms a mound 60cm(2ft) in height, of soft finely cut silvery foliage. Rarely flowers. Good background and association plant.
Aruncus	aethusifolius	Dwarf perennial with ferny green foliage and contrasting red stems carrying creamy shell-pink plumes of flowers in June. Good autumn colour. Requires full sun or part sun and a moisture retentive soil. Height 25cm (10").
Aruncus	dioicus	Clump forming perennial. Large leaves with lance shaped leaflets on tall stems and above them in mid summer, branching plumes of tiny, creamy-white flowers - in June and July, followed by interesting seed heads. Height 1.2m(4ft). Needs a rich fertile soil that does not dry out. Sun or shade.
Asphodeline	lutea	Tall stems up to 45cm(18"), covered in needle-like blue/grey leaves. Star like bright yellow flowers in June and July. Seedpods form a wand of bright green 'cherries', later drying to crinkled brown. Unusual. Any fertile soil in sun.
Aster	lateriflorus 'Horizontalis'	Compact bush-like perennial. Small dark green leaves on stiff stems. White, small, silvery flowers with clover-pink fluffy centers in October. Height to 60cm(24").
Aster	lateriflorus 'Lady In Black'	White flowers with clover-pink centers from August to September. Height 120cm((4ft). Any reasonable soil that is not to dry - on sandy soils incorporate plenty of organic matter. Sun or part shade.
Aster	novi-belgii 'Apollo'	A hardy, deciduous herbaceous perennial. White flowers with yellow centers from August through until October. Grows to around 40cm in height. Leave dead foliage on the plant as an attractive feature in winter frost & snow also this protects the crown of the plant. Split clumps every 3 years to retain vigor and flower. Prune after the worst of the weather has past. Needs a sunny spot with a well drained, but not too dry fertile soil.

Astrantia	major 'Claret'	Clump forming perennial producing wine-red flower heads on black stems from June to September. Height 40-60cm(18-24"). Requires full sun and well-drained soil.
Astrantia	major 'Sunningdale'	Striking early season yellow-green variegated foliage. Pinkish-white flowers from June - November. Height 60cm(24") Spread 25cm(10").
Baptisia	australis	Gently spreading perennial with palmate, mid to dark green leaves, consisting of 3 lance shaped leaflets. Many-flowered racemes of dark blue flowers are borne in early summer. Best in well drained soil in sun.
Bergenia	cordifolia	Large evergreen leaves, supplying all year round interest. Large sprays of deep pink flowers in March/April and occasionally in early summer when the stems seem to be longer. Height 30cm(12")
Campanula	alliariifolia	Heart shaped hairy silver/green leaves set off beautiful long arching stems hung with drooping off-white bells in June/August. Height 60cm(23"). Flowers longest in part shade. Will tolerate some dry.
Campanula	hybrida 'Kent Belle'	Stunning tall stems of large rich violet tubular flowers, set among glossy green leaves. Shade tolerant, best in a moist fertile soil. Repeat flowers if cut back after first flowering. Height to 75cm(30")
Campanula	lactiflora 'Loddon Anna'	White throated shell-pink flowers from June-September. Height to 120cm(4ft). Ideal for the back of the border.
Campanula	persicifolia	Rosette forming, spreading. Summer, nodding, bell-shaped, papery blue flowers are borne above narrowly lance-shaped, bright green leaves. Height up to 1m(39") with a spread of up to 30cm(12"). Grows well in part or full shade and requires moist but well drained soil.
Centaurea	hypoleuca 'John Coutts'	Upright perennial. Deep rose red flower heads with thistle-like centres encircled by star shaped ray petals, carried on slender stems in June and July. Deeply divided leaves are white grey beneath. Height 60cm(24") Spread 45cm(18")
Centaurea	montana 'Alba'	Hardy perennial. Leaves are grey/green with silver green undersides. Forms a neat mound. Pure white flowers with dark thistle-like centres. Loved by bees. Needs a well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Height & spread 45cm (18")
Centaurea	simplicicaulis	Grey/green leaves forming thick mats - good weed suppressing ground cover. Stiff stems throughout summer, carry small pink thistle-like flowers. Height 30cm(12"). Needs well-drained soil - prefers full sun.
Cerastium	tomentosum	Grey/white foliage, easy to grow, quite rampant - but good ground cover. White single flowers in early May and June, growing to a height of 20cm(8"). Trim hard after flowering to keep tidy. Prefers a well-drained soil and sun or part shade.
Chelone	obliqua var. alba	Upright perennial that bears terminal spikes of hooded white flowers in late summer and autumn. Leaves are dark green and lance shaped. Height 1m(39") Spread 50cm(20"). Requires shade and moist, well-drained soil.
Circium	japonicum 'Rose Beauty'	Clump forming perennial with mid to dark green, spiny, toothed leaves. In late summer and early autumn bears thistle-like deep carmine-red flower heads. Best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
Coreopsis	grandiflora 'Early Sunrise'	Hardy perennial. Bright golden yellow flowers, good for cutting. Deadheading will encourage repeat flowers throughout the summer. Forms neat clumps and can be divided every 2/3 years. 30cm(12") Any well drained soil but best in sun.
Crocosmia	'George Davidson'	Bright iris-like green leaves and masses of soft yellow flowers. Prefers sun and well-drained soil that doesn't dry out. Flowering June to September. Height 60cm(24").
Crocosmia	'Lucifer'	Easily grown in most soils, in sun or part shade. Bright iris-like green leaves and striking dark orange flowers. Flowering June and July and reaching 90cm(36").
Crocosmia	masoniorum	Upright flower stalks bear trumpet shaped 'zigzagging' flowers in orange /red. Flowers from August to September. Height 2-3ft. Requires well drained, humus rich soil in a sheltered, sunny position.

Dicentra	spectabilis	The popular Bleeding Heart or Lady-in-the-bath. Hanging locket-like flowers of pink and white are held above dissected leaves often pink tinged when first emerging. Needs some shelter from strong winds, and partial shade preferred.
Dicentra	spectabilis 'Alba'	Bleeding heart. A white form. Hardy herbaceous perennial. Forms a clump of crisp green leaves in spring from which rise stems covered in white heart shaped flowers. Does best in a good fertile soil in part shade. Height to 30/45cm (12/18").
Doronicum	orientale caucasicum	One of the first perennials to flower in April and May. Large yellow daisy-like flowers appear above fresh-green leaves. Best in partial shade, and retentive soil. A second crop of flowers appears later. Height about 60cm.
Echinacea	purpurea	Vigorous, upright perennial. Large daisy-like, purple flower heads, each with a prominent, central, orange-brown cone, are borne singly on strong stems in summer. Has lance-shaped dark green leaves. Ht 90/120cm Full sun or part shade and any reasonable soil that is not too dry.

Echinops	'Blue Globe'	Globe Thistle. Erect perennial. Wiry stems produce thistle-like, rounded heads of powder blue flowers in summer. Narrowly oval leaves are divided and greyish-green. Height 1.2m - spread 1m. Requires full sun and prefers a poor soil.
Elymus	arenarius	Lyme Grass. Spreading grass, growing in ideal conditions to 1.5m(5ft). Spectacular stiff slate, blue-gray leaves and long stiff flower spikes in July and August. Stems are bright yellow in autumn. Tolerant of most sites and soils. THIS GRASS WILL SPREAD!!!
Epimedium	roseum	A form of the popular Bishop's Mitre. Long spikes of pink flowers appear above divided and attractive evergreen foliage. One of the few perennials that will grow happily in dry shade.
Epimedium	sulphureum	An excellent ground cover plant that is attractive throughout the year. Large tough leaves are seen through most of the year; in spring sprays of yellow flowers appear. Will grow in most situations, even in shade.
Epimedium	x youngianum 'Niveum'	Compact, ground cover with heart-shaped serrated, bronze-tinted leaflets that turn green in late spring, when small, cup- shaped, snow-white flowers appear. Good for poor dry soils under trees/shrubs.
Erodium	chrysanthum	Undemanding perennials that thrive in poor sandy soils. Beautiful filigree silver foliage. Yellowish-white flowers June-July. Height & Spread 25cm(10").
Eryngium	bourgatti	Clump forming perennial that from mid to late summer carries heads of thistle-like, blue green, then lilac-blue flowers on branched, wiry stems well above deeply cut, basal, grey-green leaves. Height 45-60cm. Spread 30cm. Full sun and well drained soil.
Eryngium	planum	Evergreen, rosette forming perennial with stiff stems that in late summer bears heads of thistle-like, grey-blue flowers. Height 45cm. Requires full sun and well-drained soil. Good in poor soils.
Erysimium	'Constant Cheer'	Wall-flower. Bushy evergreen perennial with lance-shaped dark green leaves. Dusky orange-red flowers becoming purple are produced from mid-spring to early summer. Height to 30cm(12”). Good in poor soils.
Euphorbia	amgydaloids var. robbiae	Evergreen, spreading perennial with rosettes of dark green leaves. Good ground cover in poor, dry soil and semi-shade. Lime green flowers in spring. Height 45-60cm(18-24") Spread 60cm(24")
Euphorbia	characias 'Humpty Dumpty'	A large clump-forming evergreen - a real feature plant - good even in a dry garden. Long stiff stems are covered in narrow blue/grey leaves, topped with large compact heads of bright green from March to May. Height up to 70cm(30").
Euphorbia	cyparissias 'Fens Ruby'	Evergreen spreading perennial, with a mass of slender feathery, ruby red/green leaves and umbels of small, bright lime-green flowers in late spring. Especially good of dry soils. Height and spread 30cm(12"). Makes a lovely neat rounded evergreen bush.
Euphorbia	griffithii 'Fireglow'	Bushy perennial that bears orange-red flowers in terminal umbels in early summer. Leaves are lance-shaped, mid green and have pale red midribs. Height 1m. Spread 50cm. Requires full sun and well-drained soil.
Euphorbia	palustris	Dramatic heads with sulphur yellow bracts on strong stems in June & July - good for naturalizing associating well with most plantings. Growing to 50cm. Needs a well-drained soil and best in sun.
Euphorbia	polychroma	Rounded, bushy perennial with mid green leaves and heads of bright sulphur yellow flowers carried for several weeks in spring. Height and spread 60cm(24") A welcome vivid splash of colour in early spring. Good autumnal colouring. Any well drained soil in sun or part shade.
Festuca	glauca	Fine tuffty leaves in a glorious slate blue, growing to 30cm(12"). Small seed heads May-July. Good for pots in sun or shade, quite drought tolerant.
Filipendula	rubra 'Venusta'	Attractive large fluffy, flat heads of deep rose flowers in midsummer. Vine like leaves. Height to 2m(80”).
Francoa	sonchifolia	Rosette forming perennial with broadly lance shaped, variably and deeply lobed, basal leaves. In midsummer, unbranched stems bear compact racemes of pink and white flowers.
Gaillardia	'Burgunder'	Beautiful, dark red flowers from June - October. Best in a well drained, but not too dry soil and sunny position. Height 50cm(20") Spread 30cm(12"). Divide in early spring.

Geum	'Lady Stratheden'	Cup-shaped double, bright yellow flowers with prominent green stamens, on slender, branching stems, for a long period in the summer. Height 45-60cm(18-24") Spread 45cm(18"). Best in full sun.
Geum	'Mrs Bradshaw'	Scarlet double flowers on strong stems, flowering May to August. Prefer moisture retentive soil in sun or part shade. Do well in clay soils. Height 60cm(24") Spread 40cm(16").
Helenium	'Butterpat'	The mainstay of the summer border for many people. Prolific yellow daisy heads are borne for many weeks in summer. Deadheading will prolong the display.
Helleborus	corsicus(argutiflorus)	Easily grown where ground is rich in humus and drainage is good. Flowers in late winter with a pale green bloom. Best in a sheltered spot where it will produce large mounds of architectural foliage.
Helleborus	orientalis	From February to April, single white, pink or purple flowers, sometimes with dark spotted centres. Height and spread 45cm(18"). Leaves can be cut off in winter before the flowers appear - making the flowers more visible, also this seems to help prevent the spread of the fungal disease botrytis, which can damage the flowering stems.
Hemerocallis	'Bourbon Kings'	Easy to grow preferring a good fertile moist soil but not waterlogged in winter. Sun or shade as long as the soil is moist. Sandy poor soils will reduce flowering and give pale limp foliage. This variety has broad maroon flowers with a gold throat flowering in July & August and growing to 60cm (2ft).
Hemerocallis	'Catherine Woodbery'	Easy to grow preferring a good fertile moist soil but not waterlogged in winter. Sun or shade as long as the soil is moist. Sandy poor soils will reduce flowering and give pale limp foliage. This variety has pink petals with a lime green throat flowering in July & August and growing to 60cm (2ft).

Hyssopus	officinalis	Medicinal herb used in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis & rheumatism. Evergreen, thrives in sandy soil and full sun. Spikes of deep violet blue flowers, loved by bees, from June to August. Height 45cm(18"). Spread 30cm(12").
Inula	magnifica	Robust, clump-forming, upright perennial with a mass of lance-shaped to elliptic, rough leaves. Leafy stems bear terminal heads of large, daisy-like, yellow flower heads in late summer. Height 1.8m(6ft) Spread 1m(39"). Prefers part or full sun and well-drained soil. Very spectacular and architectural, but needs space!
Ipheion	uniflorum 'Wisley Blue'	Member of the onion family. From grass-like tufts of leaves come pale ice-blue star shaped, honey scented flowers in spring and sometimes again in autumn. Grows in any well-drained soil in sun. A winter mulch to protect the crown from cold and wet is a good idea. Protect from slugs and snails!
Iris	foetidissima	Rhizomatous, beardless iris. Branched stem bears up to 9 yellow tinged, dull purple or occasionally pure yellow flowers from early to mid summer. Cylindrical seedpods open to reveal rounded, bright scarlet fruits throughout winter. Height 1m(39”). Harmful if eaten.
