The largest problem with PLC’s is not the PLC but the Asset Management on the installation, where on countless occasions, the PLC is installed, but a copy of the programme isn’t left with the client.

So when there is a problem, and it is usually when production is high or a rush order is needed - miracles are expected. Sometimes miracles can occur, but more often than not, it requires a new programme to be written, or at the very least to locate the original manufacturer. In this day and age this isn’t always possible.

For example, if a copy is left on site, it can simply be a case of verifying the software and with the correct version of software, upload to the PLC - a few hours.

That is only if a copy is left on site. However, we can come in and copy the programme and store it on our backup system. We have data going back 15 years (a copy is also left with the Client).

But if there is no copy and the manufacturer has to be contacted for a copy, the cost can be vary greatly - from “Yes here is a copy for you”, to “Yes you can have a copy but it will cost £!!!!!”. Sometimes into 5 figures.

However worst case scenario is no programme, no copy, and no manufacturer, then it's a re write. As well as costing money it isn’t a fast option, because the complete sequence requires to be detailed, then fine tuned to operate the machine or process.
