Compulsory
Basic
training (CBT)
|
Introduction
- Introduced in 1990 the CBT was
designed to give budding motorcyclists the basic skill and
ability to ride safely on our roads up to a required
standard.
- Carried out over one day and covering
5 modules the student will attend both on and off road
training sessions.
- At the end of the course the
successful student will be able to ride a motorcycle of up
to 14.6 bhp (11kw) for 2 years. He/She must display 'L'
plates and will not be able to carry any passengers or go
down any motorways
License Requirements
- Provisional Licence - On your photo
card there should be a picture of a bike above the picture
of a car. Here you must make sure the end date is still
valid.
- Full Licence - If you have a full
driving licence the letter 'A' (motorcycle entitlement) must
appear on the paper part of your licence (the counterpart)
under provisional entitlement.

Pre Course
Preparation
- Before arriving you should have a
comprehensive knowledge of the Highway code The DSA have
produced a book called 'The Official Highway Code',
they have also produced a guide for beginners, called
`The Official DSA Guide to Learning To Ride’. We suggest
that both these books become acquired reading for the
beginner and are studied prior to attending the CBT. These
are available in our
bookshop.

Can I use my own
machine?
- Students are welcome to
use their own machine provided it is roadworthy. It must be
taxed and have an MOT (if required) and you must have valid
insurance for the bike. These documents must be produced
when attending your training.
About the
course
- The course is designed to give you
the basic skills required to ride a motorcycle, and is
spread over 5 modules.

Module
1 is done off road and deals with clothing and
equipment. This will enable you to make the right choice
when purchasing clothing. To view our selection of clothing

Modules
2 - 4 These are also off road and deal with the basic
skills required to ride your motorcycle.

Module
5 Carried out on road. Here you will spend a minimum of
2 hours practising those skills that you gained throughout
the morning sessions.
Eyesight Check
- Before moving out on the riding area
and before commencing modules 2-4 you will be given an
eyesight test. You must be able to read a licence plate from
67 feet (20.5m) Please bring glasses or contacts (if
needed).
Conclusion
- If you have been successful in all 5
modules we will issue you with a CBT certificate (DL196). This
will allow you to ride a 125cc motorcycle with a power output no
greater than 14.6 bhp (11kw). You must display `L’ plate’s front
and rear, not carry any passengers or go on any motorways. You
must also have valid insurance for your vehicle.
