Since the Cyrenians' community Centre opened in May 2006 the team at High Street Surgury have ben involved in providing care to many of the people who use its facilities. The aim of this healthcare service is to improve the health and life outcomes of of homeless and vulnerable people. This is being achieved through initiatives such asthe annual homeless health day (run inconjunction with Swansea School of Medicine), a specialits methodone clinic to help people stay off heroin, and multi-agency partnerships and project such as an oral health research ventrue. On a daily basis the doctors, nurses and receptionists provide such needed care, help and advice to people who are homeless or vulnerable. Happily, this hard work has been recognised by the Royal College of General Practitioners in Wales. In December 2010, the practise manager Ellen Debuse accepted the RCGP Practise Administration Tean of the Year Award at a ceremony in Cardiff. |

Swansea Homeless Health Day 2010
The Health Day was held at Zac's Place, George Street, Swansea on Thursday 4 th November 2010. The day is an opportunity for homeless people to access care that they might otherwise not get, but also provides an excellent learning experience for future doctors. 12 medical students from Swansea School of Medicine volunteered to provide health interventions or health stations. They could either observe care being provided or undertake care themselves under supervision.Participants had their blood pressure, blood sugar and weight measured, discussion of their smoking status and alcohol consumption, and, where necessary, smoking cessation and alcohol reduction advice. Staff from Swansea Drugs Project were on hand to provide drug and alcohol advice and to encourage people to attend overdose training as part of an all-Wales overdose prevention initiative. Immunisation against seasonal influenza was also available. The podiatrists provided foot examination, advice and care. Unfortunately, whilst it was not possible for dental care to be given, patients were able to have examination of their teeth and gums and to be given advice on brushing and prevention and management of tooth decay and gum disease. In addition a free health pack was provided on completion of the health assessment. The health pack included items such as toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste and tissues, anti-bacterial hand gel and socks. Free tea, coffee and cake was served.
