MEDIATION MASTER CLASSES 2010

As part of its Advanced Mediator programme, MATA have arranged a series of four Master Classes, open to both practising commercial mediators and non-mediator guests and based upon the following format:

• Interview of a prominent commercial mediator
• Identification of two key techniques used by the mediator
• Workshop on the two techniques led by MATA Faculty
• Question session

The Dates and the Mediators:

The first Master Class is on 4th February with Andrew Paton:

"Andrew Paton has been a partner with Pinsent Masons since 1986 and a litigation lawyer for more than 23 years.   Andrew has specialised, throughout most of his career, in professional indemnity matters.   In 2002 Andrew relinquished his responsibilities as head of insurance litigation  at the firm's Birmingham office to become national head of risk management.   He is accredited as a mediator by CEDR and for many years was a member of CEDR's mediation training faculty.  He is a director of ADR Net Limited, a practitioner member of the Civil/Commercial Panel of the Law Society and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.  His mediation career began in 1990 since which time he has handled a very broad range of commercial disputes (including multi-party) which have included construction, landlord and tenant, nuisance,  partnership, insurance, professional negligence, personal injury, medical negligence, commercial contracts and minority shareholder disputes.  He is founder member and chairman of the Association of Midlands Mediators, a contributor to FT Law and Practice Text "Litigation Practice" in relation to ADR, author of numerous articles on mediation and a regular speaker at ADR conferences and seminars."

The next Master classes are:

4th March: Elizabeth Birch:
Called to the Bar in 1978. One of the first at the commercial bar to become a mediator in 1996. Has sat as arbitrator since 1992. Full-time mediator and arbitrator since 2003. CEDR and BAE accredited. Areas of expertise over the past 26 years have been in commercial and international law.

25th March: David Cornes:
Full-time commercial mediator since end of 2004. Prior to that Senior partner at Winward Fearon Soiicitors (now Maxwell Winward LLP) with very extensive experience of negotiation and disputes, both domestic and international, in the High Court and in arbitration.

6th May: Tina Monberg:
Lawyer, psychotherapist, coach and trained mediator at Harvard Law School. Specialises in preventing, managing and resolving conflicts in business. Has worked with the Law Society on implementation of mediation in Denmark and is a member of the American Bar Association Section of Dispute.

The cost:

£75 + VAT (£88.13) for each Master Class payable to MATA2 or book all four for £250 + VAT (£293.75). AMT Club members (those who have attended the annual MATA Advanced Mediator Training Course) have 20% discount.
