Extreme
Negotiations & Conversations
“The aim of the two Extreme courses is to be high impact and to have a balance of skills training and experience.”
Extreme Negotiations
This one day course is designed to be an inter-active day for participants, where the trainers will look at unusual negotiation situations, using specialist techniques and role-play situations, to enhance the learning experience. The course is designed to take the participant out of their natural comfort zone and push the individual to embrace highly emotional situations. The objective is to provide already skilled mediators with further advanced techniques which can be transferred into their working lives.
“[This] course is also anchored in principled negotiation. What makes this course extreme is Duncan [Jarrett’s] experiences and the creation of situations that push people out of their comfort zone in abnormal situations.”
The programme for the day will be along the lines of:
✔ What is extreme? What makes people act extremely and what strategies should we use for dealing with such behaviour? How is it challenging?
✔ Looking at the skill set to include influencing, active listening and rapport building.
✔ Facing the challenges by looking at what works and why and investigating how far one should go when applying themselves to an extreme negotiation.
✔ Enhancing ones personal resources.

Extreme Conversations
The aim of the day is “primarily about enabling you to practice some simple facilitation tools and guidelines that might just help when encountering levels of aggressive or difficult behaviour that are decidedly not civil.”
The day will include looking at: Needs when dealing with clients and others in the work environment; Emotions and the rational mind; Getting Rational Control through awareness, calmness and communication; Listening through interpretation, evaluation and clarification; Managing the Crisis by exploring emotional tone.
The day will come to a conclusion by looking at the 7 useful attitudes, tactics and behaviours that make an effective extreme conversationalist and how to apply them to the right personality.
The course is open to mediators and non-mediators and is lead by Peter Birch, mediator, actor and trainer in organisational behaviour.

“Occasionally we encounter breaches in civility where we might feel attacked, personally abused and even humiliated. At the least we may be confused as to how to deal with things. It’s the sudden discovery that we are out of control and may not know how to proceed effectively that makes a conversation or encounter ‘Extreme’.”
Peter’s work has involved over twenty years as a professional actor, 12 years working in organizational training as well as five years as a mediator in the community and workplace.
Mediation: Following three years practice in community mediation Peter gained a certificate of competence with the erstwhile Mediation UK in 2006. Community mediation has brought him into contact with extremely emotional and difficult neighbourhood disputes. Often there seems little hope of bringing parties together let alone resolving issues that may have involved intimidation, fear and occasionally incidents of physical violence. Yet mediation can bring about positive outcomes even after years of hostility and resentment.
This experience now forms the backdrop to his work in…..
Organizational training in which Peter has been Involved since 1995 when he crossed over from professional theatre and began working as role player, facilitator and eventually as visiting tutor at the Praxis Centre, Cranfield School of Management. From 2002 he was a founding director of The Forum Partnership, a training company specializing in ‘difficult conversations’ training. This has entailed consultancy to a wide variety of Business and Public sector organizations up to Board and senior partner level. Peter’s work has often focused on helping people to have the conversations with colleagues and customers that must be had in order to draw the line on workplace bullying and abuse.
Before 1995 he was principally engaged in…..
Professional Theatre and TV: This included the original successful West End production of ‘Quartermaine’s Terms’ directed by Harold Pinter. TV performances included site foreman ‘Ulrich’ in the first series of ‘Auf Wiedersehen Pet’, the Elliott sisters’ dastardly cousin ‘Arthur’ in ‘The House of Elliot’, and the consultant doctor ‘Jack Hathway’ in BBC ‘Casualty’.
Academia: After Peter’s time in ‘Casualty’ (1997) he completed an MSc in Organizational Behaviour. He is currently doing doctoral research at Manchester Business School on the use of theatre-based methods in organizational training.
