The International Advanced Mediator Retreat

An advanced seven day residential course to be held in either Italy or Australia

6th - 12th September 2009

We invite you to join us in
• a unique opportunity to deepen and enhance your mediation skills
• the company of experienced mediators from around the world
• the character and beauty of a historical abbey set in the hills of central Italy and for our sole use.

The Course

“A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in advanced mediation technique.”

This course is designed to develop and deepen the skills of mediators who already have experience in mediating commercial disputes. It is open to all mediators, whether lawyers or not, and experience is more important than qualification. This is a unique event with mediators from different backgrounds and nationalities living, sharing and working together in a beautiful location. The course builds on the foundation skills and processes of civil and commercial mediation.

It includes work on complex cases, dilemmas, challenges and bespoke processes, and provides participants with an opportunity to challenge their own and other people’s, boundaries. A typical day starts at 08.30, finishes around 18.30 with an extended lunch break. Now in its seventh year, the International Advanced Mediator Retreat is regarded as a highly valuable experience for mediation professionals.

The Italian Venue

San Pietro is a restored Abbey built between the 7th and 12th centuries and now converted to a top quality hotel. It is situated in the Nera River national park and is less than two hours drive from Rome.

All rooms have en-suite shower/bathrooms, fridge and telephone (and satellite television; not that there will be any time to view). We eat breakfast and lunch amongst the cloisters, work and rest in the central courtyard and lawned terraces, exercise in the gardens and woodland walks and base our work in the vaulted conference room, reading hall and old refrectory. Dinner is in the restaurant, rated as one of the top two in Umbria, using local produce and recipes. This is not a place to diet!

There is a swimming pool close by and on site there is a small sauna, pre-booked massage, billiards and bar. Nearby is bicycle hire, river rafting and canyon walking. We have exclusive use of the entire property.

Details on the venue in Australia are yet to be confirmed.

The Benefits

By the end of this certified course you will be better able to:
•  design the process to suit the dispute / parties
•  model parties' behaviour
•  deal with ethical and professional dilemmas
•  understand the effect of your own principles, values and prejudices
•  recognise and use energy as a positive force in mediation
