A study published in New Scientist last week details how footballers with
an overactive sex life are more prone to sexually acquired reactive arthritis
(SARA). Two out of ten footballers tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis,
a bacterium implicated as a cause of SARA. Check it out on the web

An article in Vision Neuroscience (Porciatti et al 1999 July-August 16(4):721-726)
discusses how despite the normal size of brains and optic nerves in mice
overexpressing bcl-2, aspects of basic vision in these mice are
normal. The larger size of these organs is thought to be due to the
inhibition of naturally occurring cell death during development.

A report in the British Journal of Haemotology (Line et al Br. J. Haem.
1998 103(2):462-466) details the first case in which a mutation of the
ERCC1 gene has been seen in acute childhood leukaemia. Using a PCR
based approach researchers discovered an abnormally migrating RT-PCR product
in one patient with acute mixed lineage leukaemia. In addition, reduced
expression of ERCC1 protein was seen by Western Blotting.
