Rockingham Castle - The Watsons and Charles

Boyce, who is a guide at the castle, will give an illustrated talk about
the history of the castle, showing the interior of the rooms and views
of the garden. It also includes the ownership of the castle by the Kings
of England, the involvement in the Civil War and why Charles Dickens wrote
the novel Bleak House at the Castle.

The Boot Industry and The Raunds March in 1905
Jerome Betts also examines the outline history of the Shoe and Military
Boots in Northamptonshire. He covers the events which led to the protest
march from Raunds to London in May 1905, which has its centenary
in May and about which he has written a booklet.

highlighting current research.

Railways
and the Post
Derek Smeathers follows the History of the early posts with the second
part of his presentation, which covers the period from about 1840 - 1940.
This explains how important the railways were and how they influenced
and were vital for Post Office expansion, what competition they faced,
and how they assisted the introduction of new postal services.

us for an enjoyable and entertaining evening.

John Henry Stokes (of Great Bowden) an Edwardian
Horse Keeper...
A talk by Lois Edwards who has indexed a scrapbook belonging to John Henry
Stokes, whose horse won the Grand National in 1922. He was responsible
for many houses and buildings in Great Bowden, including the village hall.
It is a fascinating story, and his scrapbooks can be found at the County
Hall Records Office in Wigston.
