For our first trip on Hawksmoor, we planned to cruise clockwise round the Warwick Ring, but via the Stratford Canal and Worcester & Birmingham, rather than the more direct route on the GU via Bordesley Junction and the Saltley Cut to Salford Junction.  On a previous trip, we had not been impressed by the stretch though Solihull where the locals use the canal as a rubbish tip and you’re never quite sure what you will find on the numerous trips down the weed hatch.  We also wanted to try an overnight stop in the centre of Birmingham.

We were accompanied by two of our three children, Robert and Rosemary.  Our eldest daughter, Lucy, opted to stay at home to revise for her AS level exams and to feed the cats and chickens.
