Fine Particle Monitor

 PCS2000 Particle Counting System

FPM1 is a fine particle monitor for measuring the presence of particles in water. It is sensitive to particles in the range 2 - 25 microns which includes oocysts such as Cryptospiridia and Giardia.

Use FPM1 to provide a continuous on line indication of water quality.

The Particle Index, (PI), ranges from 0 to 4000. Clean drinking water will have a PI of less than 100. Increasing numbers of particles of increasing size are shown by change of PI.

FPM1 is designed to act as an inexpensive watchdog suitable for continuous on-line identification of the presence of particles in water which are to large to affect turbidity monitors.

Installation.

  1. Fix FPM1 on a wall near the water supply.
  2. Connect to the power supply.
  3. Connect the plastic tube supplied with the instrument to the water supply and clip this into the sensor head on the side of FPM1. Allow a water flow through the tube of between 50 and 150 ml/minute.
  4. Establish the values of PI which occur when the water supply is known to be acceptable.
  5. Set the alarm on FPM1 to trigger if the PI is twice the acceptable level.
  6. Leave the FPM1 to continually check that the particle content of the water is within acceptable levels.
  7. If the FPM1 alarm is triggered use additional analysis of the water to determine why increased numbers of particles in the 2 - 25 micron range have been detected.

What are the maintenance requirements?

Reset the calibration every three months by pushing the CAL button on the front panel. This should be done when the water flow through the sample tube has been stopped.

Change the plastic sample tube every three months. If the tube becomes too soiled to take readings, the display on the FPM1 will flash ----. Change the tube to restore readings.
