In this type of application, the scanner is used to illuminate, project or remotely sense objects.

Examples of this type of scanner are:

  • Missile Guidance Proximity Fuse. This work uses a combination of rotating prism scanning and a high gain receive system.

  • LIDAR. This is the modern replacement for hand held radar speed meters used by the police. The system is laser based, with a high level of integrity over a significant target range. Used in public places, laser safety was an important consideration.

  • Military Training Projectors. These scanners typically use a dome on which moving targets are projected. Many such systems use lasers, but Diverse have designed high power white light projectors for this task.

  • DMD Projection Television. This revolutionary projection television system uses an array of scanned mirrors to produce a projected image on a viewing screen.

  • LCD Projection Television. DIVERSE has designed several different types of LCD system, for mobile advertising, entertainment, and air traffic control. In all cases, the issue is always one of maintaining screen brightness in the face of high optical losses in the LCD.

  • Bar Code Scanners. The lens systems for this type of scanner must work with a good depth of field.

  • High Power Controlled Illuminator. DIVERSE, working in the Esprit programme, designed and built a high power laser scanner for semiconductor reticule illumination. The system used two 1MW pulsed lasers controlled dynamically in power and placement by complex control systems.
